GALLERY 181 “LARGE WORKS/SMALL WORKS” FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PRESS CONTACT: Marjorie Kaye @Gallery 181 (978) 741-7979 Gallery 181 is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition “Large Works/Small Works”, an interactive and spontaneous exposition of site-specific large installation, individual large works, and engaging small works. 29 New England artists and a visiting artist from Bolwing Green, OH combine energies and concepts to create a dynamic visual environment. Gallery 181’s unusually long, expansive wall space will house both the narrative and self-contained works in this exhibition. The public will also have a chance to observe the installations being made, as artists will be working in the gallery for a week prior to the exhibition’s beginning date. This will give the local community and other visitors the experience of being involved in and observing the unfolding of the artistic process. There will also be artists’ talks during the opening reception. The dates for the installation observation are June 3 - June 10, 2006. The exhibit runs from June 11 – August 10, 2006. The opening reception is Friday, June 16, from 5:30 – 8:00pm. More more information, please call (978) 741-7979 or email us at gallery181@hotmail.com. Artists participating in this exhibition are working with many styles and mediums including painting, drawing, textiles, digital work and photography. Both individually and combined, there is an energetic, and playful continuity, and an exploration of possibility present when given free reign over a spacious surface. Small works, in turn, compliment the expansive nature of the larger works by providing an introspective and concentrated focal point. Participating artists include Basil El Halwagy, whose magnificent 9 foot tall drawings emerge from his experience with the drawing medium. Amorphic, organic shapes emerge from this substance. The result is an atmosphere of visionary and primordial beginnings. Michelle Carlson visits from Bowling Green, OH to construct a 21’ wide, 6’ high installation of biomorphic formations entitled “Generations”. Her images appears as if created by the elements themselves, as small organic icons blown across a field of deep blue, ever moving, yet gathering at different vortex points across the plain of the surface. Both Rene Gagnon and Mary Melilli will be organizing their individual spaces according to a site-specific plan. Both intend to utilize the space as extension of their existing works. Small works will inhabit certain areas of the gallery, in direct contrast to the outpouring of energy of the larger works, creating a visual dichotomy of contraction and expansion. Bren Bataclan returns to Gallery 181 with his humerous characterizations, progressing toward the boundaries of complete abandon. Banafsheh Ehtemam photographs the natural world, reducing an entirety to pattern and light. Her works create new color, in their juxtaposing light and contrast. Lisa Link examines the history of the city of Lawrence, in relationship to labor in the world at large with her small, site specific digital collages. Similarly, returning artist Donna Catanzaro combines effort with Gail Smuda exhibiting their “Recipe for War”, a tongue-in-cheek, irony-filled mixed media small work.
