A Better Place

Water is very important in the world because it makes up 71% of earths surface and 65% of our bodies. Most people in the world waste water by not turning it off when they brush their teeth or waste too much water taking a shower. If people would use less water then we would be saving the world.

(Scene: Ocean)

More people in the world should recycle because it would save us more money and we can reuse recycled things. When you recycle, you move the three most polluting steps.

(Scene: Recycle bins)

The mining, transportation, and processing of ore adds a lot of pollution to the air.

Trash and waste refer to items being discarded.

(Scene: Waste, trash facilities)

The three R’s are reduce, recycle and reuse. You can reduce watching too much

TV every day and reduce the light and computer time at home. Reuse, you can reuse bags that you get at the grocery store. Recycle, recycling is very important because it saves our world.

(Scene: TV being turned off, grocery bags being reused at store).

If everybody in the world recycled then the world would be less polluted. Trash cans now have a blue trashcan that is for recycling and most people don’t recycle.

Old newspapers can become new newspapers. Old corrugated boxes can become new

corrugated boxes. Old printing and writing paper can become new printing and writing paper, wrapping paper, and paper used for magazines, books and brochures. Old scrap paper of all kinds can be used to make new paper towels and tissues, egg cartons, fruit trays and flower pots. Old grocery bags can become new mail wrappings for magazines and catalogs, new dog food bags as well as new grocery bags. Old toy boxes or shoe boxes can become new cereal and soap boxes, soft drink cartons and pizza boxes.

(Scene: show items being reused, kids doing art projects with recycled materials).

Reusable, are items that are used again by a different user. Recyclables are materials including glass, metal, plastic, and paper. Compostables are primarily yard and food wastes that can decompose and return to the land as nutrients. Garbage is generally food waste or wet food. Each year in the USA people waste 6.3 %( 13.3 million tons) of glass, 9.5 %( 19.8 million tons) of plastic, 6.7 %( 14.1 million tons) of food scraps, 7.6%

(15.8 million tons) of metals, 14.6% (30.6 million tons) of yard waste, 38.9% (81.3 million tons) of paper. That is a lot of materials that people in the world waste.

(Scene: Show people throwing out thins that could be used).

There are many ways that you can prevent waste you can buy only what you need and avoid buying products you don’t need, you can purchase items that you can reuse, and you can purchase containers and bags that you can reuse. You can also share old clothes instead of buying new ones. Waste that is dumped in storm drains can cause pollution. Recycling the newspaper would save our trees.

(Scene: Thrift store, storm drain being filled with newspaper, trees being cut down).

The ways to prevent water pollution is by conserving water by turning off the water when not needed, you can not litter in the rivers and gutters and oceans. Help clean up litter you see on beaches to help make the beaches a better place to be.

(Scene: People picking up litter at the beach).

Particles in freshwater reduces the quality of drinking water for humans and swimming environment for marine animals. Sulfate particles from acid rain can harm the health of marine animals.

(Scene: Fish).

Global warming is very harmful to animals. As the planet continues to heat up, polar bears and global warming is becoming a big issue because the glaciers and ice is beginning to melt leaving them in the water. Global warming is when the earth heats up.

It happens when greenhouse gasses trap heat of the sun in the earth’s atmosphere, which increases the temperature to rise. Global warming is making the sea rise. The ocean is also affected by global warming. One thing that is happening is warm water, is harming and killing algae in the ocean.

(Scene: Polar bears, ice glaciers breaking, fish dying).

Global warming is also causing many more fires that wipe out whole forests.

Global warming is also caused by power plants that emit electricity into the air making people breathe bad air.

(Scene: Fires, electrical plants).

Global warming is caused by many things but one main thing is electrical pollution. Some examples are turning on a light, watching TV, playing a video game, using a hair dryer, riding a car, washing or drying clothes, and many more ways. When

you use these things, you are causing more greenhouse gasses to be sent into the air.

People are doing many things to try to stop global warming. One thing is carpooling; by carpooling it minimizes the amount of greenhouse gasses.

(Scene: Watching TV, driving a car, washing clothes).

Another thing people are doing is making sure they turn off lights and TV’s when they aren’t using them. Kids can also help by turning off the TV and limit the time on the computer. They can also listen to their parents when they tell them to turn off the computer and play outside. If your family has a car, get them to use it less. Walk to the shops. Walking, running, skipping is all much more fun than sitting in a boring un-cool car. If you need to travel further than you can walk, use a bus, metro or train if you can.

(Scene: Riding bikes).

Coral reefs are threatened by global warming. They can only live in waters between 18 C and 30 C. Therefore, with the increase in temperature of the surrounding water, there has been an unprecedented increase in the number of coral bleaching events during the past 2 decades. The biggest way we can help prevent further destruction of coral reefs is to help curb global warming. The first step in reaching this goal is to educate people and make them aware that global warming exists and the consequences of it.

(Scene: Coral Reefs)

Unfortunately, awareness isn't enough. People have to do something. By recycling 1 plastic bottle not only saves anywhere from 100 to 1000 years in the landfill but also saves the environment from the emissions in producing new bottles as well as the oil used to produce that bottle. For every 1 ton of plastic that is recycled we save the

equivalent of 2 people’s energy use for 1 year, the amount of water used by 1 person in 2 month’s time and almost 2000 pounds of oil.

By recycling one ton (2,000 lbs.) of paper, we save: 17 trees; 6,953 gallons of water; 463 gallons of oil; 587 pounds of air pollution;

3.06 cubic yards of landfill space and 4,077 Kilowatt hours of energy.

More than twothirds of the material going into landfills is degradable. Every year we need a forest the size of Wales to provide all the paper we use in Britain. I think every kid should REUSE,

REDUCE, AND RECYCLE!

(Scene: People recycling and making a difference).
