New Student World Language Placement Information Sheet
New Students: Please ask your current language teacher to fill in the requested information;
your teacher should check off which Friends Academy course is the most appropriate fit for you.
All new students will be expected to take a placement exam if they expect to enroll in any level
II or a higher course. You should know that it is possible to take one core foreign language plus
one half credit Latin course during freshman or sophomore year. Please return this form to the
Friends Academy Admissions Office by May 20, 2014.

verbs, the passé composé, relative and object pronouns, plus practice of imperfect, future, and
conditional tenses. Also includes cultural project work.
_____French 2 Honors: D’Accord, Level 2. Covers basic vocabulary, regular and irregular
present verbs, the passé composé, relative and object pronouns, plus practice of imperfect, future,
and conditional tenses. Also includes cultural project work. This course goes more quickly than
French 2 and works more on reading comprehension, writing and speaking.
_____French 3: D’Accord, Level 3. Continues with vocabulary study plus more extensive
emphasis on passé composé vs. imperfect, more work with relative pronouns, plus more
sophisticated negative and interrogative expressions. Also includes cultural project work.
_____French 3 Honors: D’Accord, Level 3 plus one short novel. Covers all of the above plus
introduction to the passé simple, past conditional, and more extensive work with the subjunctive,
negative, and interrogative expressions. Also includes more extensive oral and written
production through interpersonal and presentational communicative assessments.
_____Spanish 1: Descubre, Level 1. Covers basic vocabulary, regular, stem-changing and all
irregular verbs in present, ser/estar, and conocer/saber, plus limited practice of the preterit.
_____Spanish 2: Descubre, Level 2. Continues with vocabulary study, with particular emphasis
on preterit vs. imperfect, progressive tenses, command forms, future and present perfect, and
subjunctive with personal and impersonal expressions.
_____Spanish 2 Honors: Descubre, Level 2. Continues with vocabulary study, with particular
emphasis on preterit vs. imperfect, progressive tenses, command forms, future and present
perfect, and subjunctive with personal and impersonal expressions. This course goes more
quickly than Spanish 2 and works more on reading comprehension, writing and speaking.
_____Spanish 3: Descubre, Level 3. Covers all of the above plus present and past subjunctive,
future and conditional, present and past perfect indicative and subjunctive, plus weekly work on
reading comprehension, some writing, and speaking.
_____Spanish 3 Honors: Descubre, Level 3. Covers all of the above plus more extensive
weekly work on reading comprehension, writing, and speaking.
_____Latin 2: Cambridge Latin Course, Units 2 & 3. Covers nouns (three cases, masculine and
feminine genders), verbs (three tenses), demonstrative/personal/relative pronouns, adjectives,
adverbs, participles, neuter gender, irregular verbs, pluperfect active, and imperative mood. Also
devotes time to culture and mythology.
_____Latin 3: Cambridge Latin Course, Unit 4. Covers subjunctives (all four tenses, active and
passive) subjunctive clauses, indirect statements, and ablative absolute. Also devotes time to
culture and mythology.
_____Half credit year-long Introductory Latin: Cambridge Latin Course, Units 1 & 2.
Covers nouns (three cases, masculine and feminine genders), verbs (three tenses), adjectives (1st3rd declension), question words, comparative adjectives.
_____Half credit year-long Advanced Introductory Latin: Cambridge Latin Course, Units 2
& 3 Covers nouns (three cases, 4th-5th declensions), demonstrative/personal/relative pronouns,
adjectives, adverbs, participles, infinitives, irregular verbs, pluperfect active, and imperative
mood.
_____ Chinese 2: Integrated Chinese, Level 1, Part 2. Covers all four language skills:
listening, speaking, reading, and writing; level 2 introduces 1,137 simplified characters; stroke
order for each new character is displayed, along with its pinyin pronunciation and English
translation. Students will be introduced to an increasing number of authentic materials written for
native Chinese speakers.
_____ Chinese 3: Integrated Chinese, Level 1, Part 2. In Chinese 3, students continue to build
their knowledge of vocabulary, sentence patterns, and grammar points in communicative
contexts. They also enhance their Chinese listening and speaking skills, such as pronunciation
and intonation. Students learn more in-depth Chinese reading and writing strategies and skills. In
this course, students learn more essential knowledge of Chinese culture, including the origins,
histories, anecdotes, and etiquette for various cultural settings, events, and occasions.
