Verbs are studied as a central element in the construal of the event schema and the necessary elements are observed which set them apart form other word classes in English as an analytical language. Brief course description The topics discussed include: parts of speech in general with the focus on verbs, types of verbs, auxiliary and modal verbs, verbal categories of tense, aspect and mood, tenses, modality, indirect speech, active and passive, indicative, imperative, subjunctive, and conditionals. The semantic aspect is discussed particularly regarding the meanings of modal verbs and the use of tenses. Particular points of interests will be compared in English and Croatian in order to avoid potential pitfalls of misuse in the language systems in order to avoid some common errors in the use of English. Students learn the specific metalanguage, and apply the theoretical knowledge in practice, which contributes towards the development of their communication competence and language skills.
