The course is suitable for anyone with an interest in, or involved in Diagnostic assessment of the
G.I.tract including Clinical Physiologists (as part of the BSc(Hons) Clinical Physiology (GI) degree
programme), G.I. physiologists, Specialist nurses and medical practitioners for CPD or extension of
practice purposes. Enrollment can be for the full week or individual days or half days may be
attended.

of Gastroenterology (AGIP) and De Montfort University, Leicester, as an AGIP Professional Body examination and
accredited by the Professional Body Education Committee (PBEC) of the Registration Council for Clinical
Physiologists (RCCP)
Delivered by Tutors with in-service experience interspersed with Specialist field leaders
The course is a 15 credit module which can contribute to an HE award (e.g. a Degree, University Certificate in
Continuing Professional Development, CME etc)
Content;



General:- Radiological and radio isotope protection. Use of radiological, and nuclear medicine techniques for
investigation of the GI tract, Histology and microbiology of the GI tract, Nutrition, Intestinal failure and obesity.
Therapeutics/pharmaceuticals for the GI tract. Brain gut control mechanisms.
Upper GI Tract:, oro-pharyngeal-oesophageal investigation, High resolution manometry and Impedance –pH
metry, Gastric emptying, abdominal ultrasound techniques, liver, gall bladder & pancreatic function testing.
Endoscopy & ERCP.
Lower GI Tract;- Anatomy and physiology, Radiological investigation including barium, transit studies,
proctograms and Ultrasound imaging. Pelvic floor dysfunction including urodynamics, sacral nerve stimulation, and
pelvic floor retraining techniques (Biofeedback) for the investigation and treatment of constipation and
incontinence.

Entrance Requirements
 Preferably successful completion of the GI Physiology Self Study Course end examination and Level 2 GI
Specialist option but at the University’s discretion only, practitioners with relevant experience will be considered,
providing they can demonstrate the necessary motivation and academic potential to successfully complete the
course. It is anticipated that participants will all be employed within the relevant sector of the Health Services.
Fees.
The course fee of £495 covers tuition, examinations and certification (where required) but not travel and
accommodation. Day fees are £110 (£55per half day). Participants will be responsible for meeting these costs.
