World History and Cultures Mrs. H. Dengel, Room 231 E-Mail: hdengel@burgettstown.k12.pa.us Burgettstown High School Textbook: World History: The Human Journey, 2005, Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, Inc. Grading Scale: A = 92-100 B = 83-91 C = 70-82 D = 60-69 F = 0-59 Homework: Almost always you will be given time to start assignments at the beginning of class. Because you cannot pass this course with test/quizzes alone, it is highly advisable that you utilize class time wisely. Students who have NOT completed their homework will receive zero credit for their lack of effort. Unanswered questions do not constitute completeness. In addition, shared completion of assignments will not be tolerated. Each assignment is worth 5 points. Responsible students will review their course materials nightly. Pop Quizzes: Pop quizzes can occur at any time and will relate to all material covered by lecture, notes, text, “movies” and outside readings. Each pop quiz is equivalent to 10 points. The number of pop quizzes will vary per nine weeks. Exams: Exams will be a combination of multiple choices, true/false, who am I’s, completion, short/long essay questions, matching, chronological listing of events and identifications. Information for exams will be provided through lecture, group activities, text readings, supplemental readings, homework, worksheets, and “movies”. Mere memorization of material will not guarantee an outstanding grade. Exams will vary in points dependent upon the amount of material covered. Most exams will be completed during the class period, therefore always bring your class materials. Since exam dates are given at least 4 class periods in advance, it is mandatory that all students present on the day of the exam take it. In complete fairness, any student who is absent the day of the exam will be required to take a make-up essay exam. Map exams will precede other exams. Participation: Points will be awarded on a daily basis for those who come prepared with all materials to class, are on time, and contribute to the positive learning environment of the classroom. Materials: It will be necessary for all students to report to class with a notebook, class materials and writing utensil. Failure to report to class prepared will result in a loss of the daily participation points. Students are required to have a separate notebook for my class. A binder will be most helpful as packets will be issued for each unit of study. However, individual pieces of paper are unacceptable to turn in for homework – notebooks only! Return of Exams: Review of exams will occur once every student has completed them and all have been graded (usually 1 week). All exams will be kept in the classroom file and will be redistributed for student use in preparation of the mid-term and final if necessary. Projects: It is expected that students will complete the assignment(s) within the given timeframe and complete them independently unless stipulated otherwise. Additionally, guidelines will be given as part of the assignment; failure to follow directions will result in a loss of points. Internet: This resource will be utilized throughout the school year. School rules apply when accessing information and completing assignments. Students will be assigned computers from the lab and should remember their assigned number to expedite the log-on process. Help: I am available before school, after school on Tues. – Thurs., and during homeroom with advanced notice. Students should always make arrangements ahead of time to meet with me as my schedule is subject to change. I am also available during period 4/5 and have a study hall in my classroom during period 3. School District Website: Nearly everyday I update the daily homework assignments onto the assignment calendar. Additionally, testing dates are also posted here. This is to be used as a guide for classroom assignments, especially for parents who want to know whether their child should be doing homework. www.burgettstown.k12.pa.us Make-Up Work District Policy 2015-2016: Please see handbook for specifics regarding long-term absences.
