Public Speaking Mrs. Godwin Course Description: Public Speaking instruction will focus on methods of preparing and delivering a speech and methods of gaining complete control as a speaker. We will explore the personal, social, and cultural benefits of public speaking. Topics covered in preparation of speeches include managing fear of public speaking, finding appropriate topics, researching topics, and structuring speeches with supporting evidence. Types of speeches to be given (but not limited to): Demonstration Interview Biography Persuasive Informational Impromptu Experience Effective Research time will be given in the LMC and Computer Labs in preparation for each speech. Delivery dates will be decided using 1) volunteers and 2) lottery. Students must be in attendance on day of speech. If not in attendance, a note signed by a parent or guardian stating reason for absence is required the first day back, or a ten point deduction will be assessed to the speech (see Public Speaking Agreement). Materials needed: Five pocket folder or 3 ring binder Paper 1 cassette tape Plagiarism: Time will be spent in class discussing the definition and ways to avoid it. Speeches (with the exception of demonstration and impromptu) will be turned in on date of delivery. Plagiarism will result in a failing grade for the speech plagiarized.
