Neighborhood Watch programs are one of the most effective ways to help prevent crime and enhance public safety in an area. They provide extra eyes and ears on the street for reporting crimes and in turn helps forge bonds between neighbors and improves relations between police and the community served. All area residents, owner or renter, and businesses are invited to attend the information session and get involved. This is an introductory nonobligation forum on Neighborhood Watch programs ... levels of participation in a neighborhood watch program vary depending on interest and time availability. Join us on April 19 to learn more, or to just learn on how to identify neighborhood public safety issues and concerns and how to report them. This program is geared to the Lark Street commercial district and the surrounding residential neighborhoods. We all have a role to play in helping create safe neighborhoods. 2--Neighborhood Association Meetings Washington Park NA meets Tuesday, April 12 at 7:30 PM at First Presbyterian Church, corner of Willett and State Streets. The agenda will feature a presentation by representatives of the Albany Public Library on their 2011 budget. Hudson/Park NA meets Wednesday, April 13 at 7 PM at First Israel AME Church, 381 Hamilton Street between Dove and Lark Streets. Center Square Association meets Thursday, April 21 at 7 PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 85 Chestnut Street between Swan and Dove Streets. 3--Common Council Committee Meetings+ Law, Buildings & Code Enforcement meets Thursday, April 14 at 5:30 PM to consider Ordinance 98.121.10 to allow the keeping of hens within city limits and Ordinance 23.32.11 that would prohibit businesses from displaying wares in front of their establishments. Finance, Assessment & Taxation meets Wednesday, April 27 at 6 PM (or following Council Caucus) to consider Ordinance 25.41.11 authorizing $500,000 in bonding for traffic signal replacement and improvements, and Ordinance 26.41.11 authorizing $100,000 in bonding for the Madison Avenue Traffic Safety & Design Study. Ad Hoc Committee on Pesticides meets Monday, April 25 at 5:30 PM and Monday, May 9 at 5:30 PM to continue discussions on Albany's Pesticide Ordinance. 4--APD Child Safety Seat Check-up Event The Albany Police Department, along with Safe Kids and DePaula Chevrolet will be hosting a Child Safety Seat Check-Up Event (Flyer Attached) on Saturday, April 30, from 11 AM-2 PM, at DePaula Chevrolet’s Truck Lot on the corner of Central Ave & Everett Rd. Come Join the Family Fun with Music, Clowns, Face Painting and More. 5--Capital Region Housing Fair The 2011 Capital Region Housing Fair is Saturday, April 30 from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Albany Public Library, 161 Washington Avenue, Albany. Free and open to the public. Information on grant and loan programs for first time buyers and existing homeowners. Bank of America, Fannie Mae and the Legal Project will be available for private consultations about existing mortgages. Bring a photo ID and obtain a free credit report. Details at www.ahphome.org or call 434-1730. 6--NRC Annual Meeting and Awards The Neighborhood Resource Center's Annual Meeting and Award Recognition will be Thursday, April 28 at 6 PM at the Howe Branch of the Albany Public Library on the corner of Schuyler and Broad Streets in Albany. This year's NRC Honorees this year are: Susan Dubois, Senchyna Service Award; Council Member (10th Ward) Hon. For more information call 964-6208 7--Center Square & Hudson/Park Spring Cleanup The Center Square and Hudson/Park Neighborhood Associations are organizing their annual Neighborhood Spring Clean-Up for Saturday, April 16. Volunteers are asked to meet at the Hudson/Jay Turnaround Park at 8:30 AM. City to provide tools (rakes, shovels, bags, etc.). There will be a post clean up picnic at noon in the Park. Bring a dish to share ... hot dogs, hamburgers, etc will be supplied. This is a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and help clean-up the neighborhood after the long winter. This IS NOT the day to place your household trash curbside for pick-up. See the article below for special curbside trash household pickups. 8--Household Spring Cleanup Curbside Trash Pickups The City of Albany has announced the schedule for it Annual Household Spring Cleanup program which provides city residents with an opportunity to dispose of their excessive household trash. Only residents who live in residential dwellings with four (4) or less units may participate in this program. Trash should be placed curbside the evening prior to your scheduled spring cleanup day. The schedule special pick-up in our area is as follows: If your normal collection day is Tuesday (you ordinarily place your trash curbside Monday evening)your Spring Cleanup day is on Tuesday, April 19, 2011. This includes the Center Square and Hudson/Park neighborhoods and part of the Washington Park neighborhood. If your normal collection day is Wednesday (you ordinarily place your trash curbside Tuesday evening) and you live between the boundaries of Madison Avenue to New Scotland Avenue and Delaware Avenue to Manning Blvd., your spring cleanup is on Wednesday, May 25, 2011. This includes the Park South Neighborhood and part of the Washington Park neighborhood. Trash should be placed curbside, after 7 PM, the evening prior to your scheduled spring cleanup day. Hazardous Waste is never accepted curbside even on spring cleanup days. Please call the Department of General Services at 434-CITY with any questions regarding the Household Spring Cleanup or if you don't see your neighborhood listed or are unsure of your day. 9--Board of Zoning Appeals + The next meeting of the Board of Zoning Appeals is Wednesday, April 13 at 5:30 PM. The agenda includes a public hearing on the following application: 248 State Street: The case of T-Mobile Northeast, LLC regarding the premises located at 248 State Street requesting a Special Use Permit and Area Variance pursuant to §375-26, §375-27, §375-66C, §375-66D and §375-95 of the City of Albany Zoning Ordinance to allow for a telecommunications installation consisting of six (6) panel antennas and a 12’x 15’ equipment platform on the roof of an existing building at a height of 134 feet. The proposed telecommunications installation is a special permit use and exceeds the maximum permitted height of 35 feet in the R-2C One- and Two-Family Row House Residential zoning district. The following meeting of the Board of Zoning Appeals will be Wednesday, April 27 at 5:30 PM. The agenda for that meeting includes a public hearing on the following application: 200-202 Lark Street: The case of Bonsai Catering, Inc. (Wine Bar & Bistro) c/o Linnan & Fallon, LLP regarding the premises located at 200 AKA 202 Lark Street requesting a Special Use Permit pursuant to §375-27F and §375-71C of the City of Albany Zoning Ordinance to allow for an expansion of a special use permit approved in Case #1-01, 444 to permit the sale of liquor at a restaurant serving alcohol approved to serve only beer and wine. A new special use permit is required for any expansion or alteration of a use already authorized by a special use permit The following is the BZA status of previously reported cases: 385 State Street: The case of Millus McLaughlin on behalf of McLaughlin Limited Partnership regarding the premises located at 385 State Street requesting a Use Variance pursuant to §37526 and §375-66C of the City of Albany Zoning Ordinance to allow for a change of use from a four (4)-unit apartment building to a five (5)-unit apartment building. The proposed five (5)unit apartment building is not a permitted use in the R-2C One- and Two-Family Row House Residential zoning district. PENDING All meetings of the BZA are held in the Common Council Chambers at City Hall, if you would like a copy of these applications please let me know. 10--Household Hazardous Waste Days The Department of General Services has announced its Household Hazardous Waste collection day for 2011. Residents must pre-register by calling 434-CITY or online at www.albanyrecycles.com. Only residents of the City of Albany are eligible to participate. However, small businesses that generate less than 32 gallons a month of hazardous waste may participate but will be charged a small fee. All participants must pre-register to be admitted. The following dates -- all Thursdays -- have been scheduled: April 21 May 5 June 2 All hazardous waste days will run from 4 to 7 PM and take place at the City of Albany Rapp Road Landfill. At no time should household hazardous waste be placed curbside for disposal.
