IDD Populations and Clinical Assessments Training

I/DD Populations and
Clinical Assessments
Program Description
Objectives
Many clinicians often express concern over appropriate mental
health assessments for individuals that have
intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD). Understanding
the needs of this population is often absent from most
graduate level clinical courses of study, despite evidence that
individuals with I/DD experience mental health challenges at a
rate greater than the typically developing populations (Nezu,
Nezu & Gill-Weiss, 1992). Misdiagnosis and diagnostic
overshadowing can lead to inappropriate care causing greater
challenges for these individuals as well as their systems of
support. This two day training opportunity intended for licensed
clinicians that provide Comprehensive Clinical Assessments
(CCA) and Outpatient Therapy (OPT) will provide a review of
important considerations for assessment, diagnosis and
treatment of mental health conditions for individuals with I/DD.
The first day of training will be devoted to providing a
comprehensive and accurate assessment for this population.
Day two will focus on differential diagnosis and linking to and
providing appropriate care and mental health treatment.
Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
 Review integration of mental health assessment strategies for
individuals with I/DD into one’s practice.
 Describe examples of occurrences and/or vulnerabilities of
diagnostic overshadowing, psychosocial masking, baseline
exaggeration, intellectual distortions and/or cognitive
disintegration within one’s practice
 Review and describe common physical health conditions for
individuals with I/DD and how their manifestation can mimic
symptoms of mental illness
 Describe the application of considerations of heightened
vulnerabilities specific to trauma, bereavement and selfesteem for individuals with I/DD
 Review and describe tools/surveys and manuals specific to
the assessment and diagnosis of mental illness for individuals
with I/DD
 Review and identify treatment partners and resources
available to assist in supporting individuals with dual
diagnoses (mental illness and I/DD)
