Welcome new members Steve and Andrea! Margarita
inducted Steve Taylor and Andrea Machado into the club today.
Steve is owner and general manager of Servpro of
Lexington/Bedford and has also had a career as a professional
musician. He’s a man of many talents who is looking forward to
becoming a Rotarian to “help the community and a small part of
the world become a better place”. Andrea works at Servpro in
Marketing and Sales. She and her husband have two little girls
and she’s looking forward to community involvement and being
a great example for her kids. She was moved by Rotary’s
sense of purpose and community. We welcome you!
L to R: new members Steve and Andrea, Membership chair
Margarita and President Christine
District PR Forum: Headed by our own Bob Cassidy, this forum is for Rotarians who want to improve
their ability to get the word out about the great stuff that Rotary does; not surprisingly, this same
information will improve your tool kit for getting the word out about your business.
District Annual Training. April 4, 6:30 p.m., Sheraton Tara: Facilitated sessions and a super
networking opportunity. President Christine says: “I guarantee that you will learn something that you
can use outside of Rotary as well” and president-elect Peter says this is “a great opportunity to get an
idea of Rotary’s ‘Picture’”. Especially for new members, that last comment is something to consider.
There’s so much Rotary can do!
Special Olympics: Our club will once again have the pleasure of helping at the Special Olympics
spring event at Lexington High School. We help at the food tent, making PB&J sandwiches, cooking
hamburgers and hotdogs, and assembling food, and then being part of the team that makes sure the
food gets to the athletes. It’s always rewarding. A sign-up sheet was passed around and we have a
very strong response to this opportunity. Thank you!
Say Au Revoir, but not Goodbye: It’s certainly our hope that Milan and Sheila will make good on his
promise to come back for visits. Milan is an outstanding Rotarian, and Sheila is a Rotarian in all but
name. Milan was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow pin for multiple contributions to The Rotary
Foundation, and the club joined in the reading of some verses about Milan (and Sheila) and a little
geographical (and fanciful) show-and-tell. For those who missed it, the poem is included at the end of
this newsletter.
Program: Delightful and animated sous-chef Jennifer Patrick gave us a tour of how she got here (and
an impressive journey it was) and what she tries to do when planning menus. Having just enjoyed
some of her very tasty creations made her talk all the more interesting. Growing up in Wisconsin,
Jennifer has expanded her view and tastes with visits to Europe and experience in restaurants and
catering, including Harpo Studios. Her cuisine embraces the world and she likes to bring ethnic
flavors and dishes to her offerings with some twists to make her dishes approachable and memorable.
Raffles and Happy Dollars: Jim won the door prize and Melinda tried for the right card in a new
deck. No go, but hey, there wasn’t much in the pot either!
In Happy Dollars, Jim gave a heartfelt appreciation of what a good secretary Melinda is for the club;
Nat put in for Milan, as did Christine, Britton (who put in 20 happy nickels), Andy, Terry, Ralph,
Margarita, Bill, Susanna and Melinda who said that Milan is the most inspirational Rotarian she’s met
to this point; Cliff was sorry he missed last week but brought lots of Rotarian magazines to make up for
it; Victor was happy that daughter Christina had been home; Susanna noted that daughter Kate has a
piece published in the Huffington Post;Terry was glad he’d made it in time and thanked Bob C. for his
part in making the TV for Living Waters happen; Bob C. was glad for our new members and Ralph and
Margarita were too; Kevin put in for Sheila!; our newest Rotarians Andrea and Steve were glad to be
here and Steve noted he was glad to be with an organization with people of great character; Bob
started to put in $10… then $5…. then a quarter for Milan but thought better of it and put in a dollar for
Sheila; Milan, appropriately, put in his normal donation.
WE AIN’T SMILIN’ ‘CAUSE WE’RE GOING TO MISS MILAN
Lucky New York! Our loss is their gain
His worth to our club is not hard to explain:
but for those who don’t know him, here’s a short list
there’s much more to Milan, but you’ll get the gist.
His happy dollars (er, quarters) might make him look cheap
but his passion for Rotary, is incredibly deep
He’s a Paul Harris fellow, multiple times.
That’s a big stack of coins if you count it in dimes.
Milan’s led by example – just like his dad
Milan’s son’s a Rotarian – that’s really not bad.
And thank God for Sheila, the light by his side
She’s as committed as he is, it can’t be denied.
The first club he joined was across the Pacific
The Philippines was where he learned Rotary’s terrific.
Matching grants and some libraries needing more books
Were his entry to helping – and then he was hooked.
Milan’s globe-trotting is hugely fantastical.
His skill for adapting is truly elastical.
Is there a corner on earth that he hasn’t seen?
Finding clubs in odd places he finds quite routine.
Gift of Life? He’s a lifer, and when he’s asked why
He’ll try to explain, but will most likely cry…
To have such an impact in a life-changing way
is a gift to the givers he would certainly say.
Quiet, dry humor; deep dedication;
love of family and faith and the life of our nation;
unfailingly humble, always there with a “Yes”,
To Milan and Sheila: here’s to Great Happiness!
and NOW we are smilin’ …..
because we know Milan.
Let’s Make Up!
The Four Way
Test
1. Is it the
TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all
concerned?
3. Will it build
GOODWILL
and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS
?
4. Will it be
BENEFICIAL
to all
concerned?
