You have gotten to read some 19th century writing

You have gotten to read some 19th century writing. Now I want you
to try and emulate the style of Edgar Allen Poe’s writing. I want you
to use your own words, but try to sound like him. You can have a
conversation between Watson and Holmes, describe in detail a
setting they might visit, or begin your own Sherlock Holmes story in
Doyle’s voice.
I would like about 300 words. Again, look for words from the story
that you can borrow, and also look as sentence constructions.
Rubric
An A grade looks like…
Many places were the
voice is very much like
Doyle’s. Vocabulary is
‘old-fashioned’ sounding
and sentence
constructions are
complex and varied. It
sounds realistic and
authentic.
A C grade looks like…
There are a several
places where voice is
pretty good. There are
places also partsthat
sound too modern.
There are places where
you could have used
more authentic
vocabulary. Some
sentences are complex
and varied, but others
are too modern in
construction.
A D or F grade looks like…
You don’t sound very much
like Doyle’s style of writing.
There are only one or two
places where you got it.
You sound too modern.
You use very few bigger
words and the quality is
lacking. Sentences are too
short and not compound. It
sounds like a 9th grader in
2009 more than a 9th
grader in 1879. S
