Course Title: Earth Science Grade Level: 8th (required course) Course Description: Earth Science is the study of the earth and the universe around it. This course is broken down into four major areas, to include the following: 1. Geology: The study of the origin, history, and structure of the solid earth and the processes that shape it. Geology is composed of the forces that created and shape the earth to include: plate tectonics, deformation, earthquakes, volcanoes, and the forces of weathering, erosion, and deposition. Also included are the composition of the earth, the minerals and rocks that make up the earth, and the history of the earth. 2. Oceanography: The study of the physical characteristics, chemical composition, and life forms of the oceans. Oceanography is composed of the topography of the ocean floors, composition and properties of the ocean water, and movements of the ocean (to include currents, waves, and tides. 3. Meteorology: The study of the universe beyond the earth. Meteorology is composed of the characteristics and composition of the atmosphere, atmospheric moisture (to include clouds and precipitation), and weather (to include air masses, fronts, and forecasting). 4. Astronomy: The study of the universe beyond the earth. Astronomy is composed of the composition and characteristics of stars, the solar system and its members (planets, moons, rings, and other bodies). Instructional Objectives: Students will be introduced to Earth Science through the many theories on the forces that affect the dynamic changing earth; composition of the earth; the forces that reshape the crust; history of the earth; its oceans; atmospheric forces and weather; its place in the universe; and to use the scientific method to investigate and solve problems in science.
