NZQA registered unit standard 1650 version 6 Page 1 of 3 Title Prepare a horse for travel by road, and load and unload Level 3 Purpose Credits 3 This unit standard is intended for people who are required to travel horses in routine day to day care of horses in training in an equine racing industry context. People will be working under limited supervision with responsibility for their work routines. Classification Equine>Equine Care Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Demonstration of competency must be consistent with: Workplace and/or stable procedures including safe work practices when loading and unloading horses Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 Code of Welfare: Horses and Donkeys available at http://www.mpi.govt.nz. 2 Candidates must demonstrate competency in a commercial horse enterprise. 3 Loading and unloading practices must be consistent with the NZ Pony Club Manual 1, Revised and Updated by Kevin Lawrence BHSI; 2009. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Prepare the float or truck for horses to enter. Evidence requirements 1.1 Describes the features, and differences between floats and trucks for loading, unloading, and the way horses position themselves when travelling. 1.2 Checks internal and external features for safety. 1.3 Prepares partitions for horses. Evidence requirements 2.1 Identifies and packs supplies for the horse's requirements for the duration of time away. 2.2 Packs equipment and personal gear for travelling personnel. Outcome 3 Prepare the horse with safety gear ready for travel, and attend to the horse’s requirements during break stops. Evidence requirements 3.1 Fits protective gear to horse for travel. 3.2 Attends to horse’s requirements during break stops. Outcome 4 Load the horse on a float or a truck safely in preparation for travel, demonstrate understanding of safety considerations, and methods for loading difficult horses Evidence requirements 4.1 Confidently leads the horse up the ramp and secures in the float or truck to prevent back off when unloaded, demonstrating safe loading practices. 4.2 Raises and secures the ramp. 4.3 Describes safety considerations when loading and unloading, and suitability of loading methods for difficult horses. Outcome 5 Unload the horse from a float or a truck. Evidence requirements 5.1 Safely unloads the horse in a methodical manner without injury to horse, equipment or self, demonstrating safe unloading practices. 5.2 Reports physical and psychological condition of the horse Outcome 6 Attend to immediate post-travel activities relating to horse and vehicle.
