Student tasks
1. Select nine words/phrases from the list at
the bottom of the page and write each
one in a blank space in the grid below.
2. Listen as your teacher reads out some
definitions.
3. When you hear a definition which relates
to one of the words on your bingo card,
put a neat cross through the key word.
4. Call out ‘Bingo!’ when you have either a
horizontal or a vertical line or a full
house.

Teaching notes
1. Make sure that all students have selected nine words/phrases from the list provided and
written one in each of the blank spaces on their bingo card.
2. Read out the definitions below at random, keeping a tally of those which you have used.
3. If the students think they have the word/phrase which matches the definition, then they should
cross it through on their bingo card. The three winners are the first with a horizontal line, the
first with a vertical line, and then the first with a full house.
4. Check that the words on the winner’s bingo card match the definitions which you have read
out.

abrasion
Rocks and pebbles wear away the bed and banks of the river.
attrition
Rocks and pebbles knock against each other becoming smaller.
corrosion
River water dissolves rocks and minerals e.g. chalk and limestone.
deposition
The river drops material which it has been transporting.
erosion
The wearing away of the bed and banks of the river.
gorge
A steep-sided, narrow rocky valley.
hydraulic action
The force of the water wearing away the bed and banks of the river.
lateral erosion
The sideways wearing away of the riverbanks.
long profile
A graph showing changes in height from source to the mouth of the river.
lower course
The section of the river where most deposition takes place.
particle size
A method for comparing the diameter of individual grains of sediment.
saltation
The process of small pebbles bouncing along the riverbed.
suspension
Very fine light material transported in the water.
traction
Large rocks and boulders are rolled along the riverbed.
transportation
The process of the river carrying material.
upper course
The section of the river where most vertical erosion takes place.
valley
The low area of land between hills or mountains.
vertical erosion
The downwards wearing away of the riverbed.
Extension task: Using a large version of the River Ashes Hollow image
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ashes_Hollow_River.jpg), ask students to locate as many of the
key terms as possible.
