CPR- Healthcare Provider Course

Changes for 2006

As far as the course itself the guidelines are much stricter.

The student will be required to demonstrate competency without any assistance, hints, or prompting.

For parts of the skill check off you will be timed with a stopwatch.

A child is now considered 1 year old to puberty instead of until age 8

The primary focus is now on COMPRESSIONS- “prime the pump”.

Compressions should be HARD and FAST and allow for chest RECOIL

If you are not sure whether the victim has a pulse, start CPR. Unnecessary CPR is less harmful than not performing CPR at all if they need it

The following changes are to be implemented immediately, though I believe it will take time for most of us to change our mindset!

A= airway B= breathing C=circulation D=defibrillation

Adult 1-rescuer CPR Skills Testing

CPR hand position: Center of chest, between the nipples

Compressions to breathing ratio: 30:2

Compressions will be timed to be sure that 30 compressions are given

in less than 23 seconds.

After 5 sets you would reassess.

Adult 2-rescuer CPR with AED Skills Testing

This is now a 1 shock scenario instead of the previous series of 3.

Continue CPR with chest compressions immediately after 1 shock.

2- rescuer ratio is 30:2

Child 1-rescuer CPR

Carotid pulse- absent or pulse is <60 bpm with signs of poor perfusion start CPR

CPR hand position: center of breastbone between nipples.

May use 1 or 2 hands depending on size of child.

Compress 1/3 to ½ depth of chest (used to be 1- 1 ½”)

Compression to breathing ratio: 30 : 2

Child 2-rescuer CPR

Compression to breathing ratio: 15 : 2

Infant 1-rescuer CPR

Still considered less than 1 year old

Brachial pulse- absent or pulse is < 60 bpm with signs of poor perfusion start CPR

Compress 1/3 to ½ depth of chest

(used to be ½- 1”) (still 2 fingers at nipple line)

Compression to breathing ratio: 30 : 2

Infant 2-rescuer CPR

2 thumbs with encircling hands for 2 rescuer at nipple line

Compression to breathing ratio: 15 : 2

AED

In a child, first perform 5 cycles of CPR, then attach the AED as soon as it is available

Choking

Conscious has not changed .

Unconscious adult / child / infant- NO blind finger sweep even in adult

Sequence for adult / child / infant- Look in mouth, attempt to ventilate, if unable to ventilate, reposition and attempt to ventilate again, START CPR!!!!!

We will no longer be doing abdominal thrusts on the unconscious, choking victim or back blows on the unconscious infant!
