Since 1981, CASID has been designated by the U. S. Department of Education as a
comprehensive National Resource Center for Foreign Language and International Studies.
Programs and research are focused on a variety of international development topics, including
development assistance policy, food and hunger, environment, health, and poverty.

international development from the perspective of the social sciences and liberal arts. The center
engages in a variety of activities to enhance undergraduate and graduate instruction, encourage
multidisciplinary research, improve the quality of scholarship, and disseminate knowledge offcampus – all with a focus on development issues that cut across geographic areas, such as
working to improve the health, education, and living conditions of the world’s poor.
