Uniform Velocity
Uniform velocity is defined as constant speed in a constant direction. All of the following problems are
based on uniform velocity.
Δd

Δt
Example:
1. If two hikers travel west on the Trans-Canada trail for 5.0h and cover 42 km, what is their
average velocity for the trip?
Velocity =
Displacement
Displacement = 42 km west
Time
Time = 5.0 h
Velocity = 42 km = 8.4 km west
5h
h
2. Mary walked east along the trail at a velocity of 3.6 km/h. for 2.1 h. What was Mary’s
displacement?
3. How long would it take a hiker to travel a total distance of 25.0km at an average velocity of 5.2
km/h.
4. The cruise control of a car is set at 80.0 km/h. What distance does the car travel in 3.5 h?
5. In 1997, Thrust SSc, the world’s fastest jet-engine car, traveled 604 m at an average velocity of
341 m/s. How long did this take?
6. What is the velocity of an airplane that flies 602m[East] in 2.50 s?
7. The tine on a tuning fork moves 1.0mm to the right in 0.004s. What is the velocity of the tine in
m/s?
8. An electron travels at a uniform velocity of 1.30 x 105 m/s. How much time is required for a
displacement of 1.00m?
9. A spaceship traveled at a uniform velocity of 3.2 x104 km/h for 2.7 days. What was the
displacement of the spaceship?
10. A hockey player’s slapshot averages 51.5 m/s on its flight from the blue line to the goal, 20. m
away. How long does the puck take to reach the goal?
11. An airplane travels from Calgary to Toronto in 4 h 20 minutes. Find the average velocity if the
distance between the cities is 4330km.
12. An earthquake created a succession of giant water waves, called tsunamis, off the coast of Japan.
The waves traveled at an average velocity of 800.km/h. If the distance from the source of the
waves to the northern coast of Australia is 8200km, how long did it take the first wave to reach
the Australian coast?
13. A car leaves Dartmouth at 10:00 am and arrives in Truro at 11:30 am. The odometer reading in
Dartmouth was 12 800.0 km, in Truro the odometer reading was 12 895.0 km. Truro is north of
Dartmouth. What was the average velocity during this trip?
14. A car passes Truro at 2: 00 pm. It travels to Amherst at a constant velocity of 110.0 km/h. The
distance between Truro and Amherst is 175 km. What time will the car reach Amherst?
15. An elevator starting at a position of +35.9 m starts moving at a constant velocity of –5.3 m/s. If it
takes the elevator 4.8 s to reach the next stop, where did the elevator stop?
