Trafford Special Constable What made you join Greater Manchester Police as a special constable? I wanted a new challenge in life, learn new skills, find out as a person what I was capable of. Develop myself in all directions. I also wanted to help people, solve problems, work with a team. How would you describe your role in the organisation? My role is to offer support to Greater Manchester Police in any way that is required. Attached currently to the Neighbourhood Office so working closely with them. What gives you the greatest satisfaction in your role? Knowing that when I leave the station I have helped someone, given my assistance and given my best to that situation and the people concerned. What has been the highlight in your role as a special constable so far? Certain jobs that I have attended, assisting people who are facing challenges for whatever reason. Highlights have been too many to mention, but could be from the ensuring an elderly couple got back to their coach after the Rugby game, to ensuring a person who barricaded themselves in a room came to no harm and felt enough confidence after speaking with them to come out. My highlight in one sense was when I had passed my probationery period and I was confirmed into rank, I felt so proud that day, and know my father was also very proud. Do you have another job – if so, what do you do? Investigating Fly tipping for a local authority. How has the role of special constable assisted you in your other employment? The skills I have learnt has enabled me to write more comprehensive statements, understand the legal process better and use the confidence I have gained in my role as a Special Constable in my day job. What do your family and friends think about you being a special constable? I have only chosen to tell a few select friends. My family are very proud of me, the select friends think it’s also great. What advice would you give to individuals wanting to join the Special Constabulary? To take a look, have the courage to join and have a go. Give it a try. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Has the role of special constable fulfilled your expectations? To some extent, I think there is room for more expansion of the role and it seems to work differently by division. What are your future career aspirations? I would like to progress through the rank structure and to learn more, do more training.
