The course will focus on the voices and portrayal of women in classic and contemporary works, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama and film. Students will gain an appreciation of such perspectives through critical analysis of various works, exhibiting their understanding and interpretations through oral discussions and written assessments. Texts: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams Two Old Women by Velma Wallis Ophelia Speaks by Sara Shandler One individually selected & teacher/parent approved text of the student’s choice Supplemental shorter readings of short fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama Assignments: Assignments will involve reading, writing, research, and hands-on activities. These will include individual and group work, as well as presentations. Most reading assignments will be done outside of class, as will some of the group work. Assessment: Assessments will include reading quizzes, essays, projects/presentations, and journals. Grades for the term will be a percentage of the total points possible for the term. So, if there are 1,000 points available and you receive 900, then you have 90%. If you have 500, then you have 50%. The percentages translate into the following letter grades: 100-95% 94-90 89-87 86-84 83-80 79-77 = = = = = = A AB+ B BC+ 76-74 73-70 69-67% 66-64 63-60 59- = = = = = = C CD+ D DF NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT ALL WRITTEN WORK TO PASS!! That means that if you have 99%, but do not submit a written assignment, you fail. It’s pretty straightforward. If an assignment is turned in late, you will receive a zero, and your course grade will be reduced 1 letter. Four late submissions will result in a failing grade for the course, and you will be withdrawn.
