He was a protégé of Saint John Bosco. An altar boy at age 5, he entered the Oratory School preparatory to becoming a priest at 12. Dominic was well-liked and pious, his health forced him to give up his dream of the priesthood and he died at age 15. His dying words: “What beautiful things I see!” His birthplace is now a retreat house for teenagers; the home where he grew up in Morialdo, Italy is now a retreat house for children. The final house in which he lived is the home in Mondonio where the Savio family moved when he was 10, and where he eventually died. Here one can see his father’s metal shop, and his mother’s tailoring shop. His tomb is in the basilica of Mary, Help of Christians in Turin, Italy, not far from the tomb of his mentor, teacher, and biographer, Saint John Bosco. Last Week’s Collections and Attendance If you or a family member wish to be placed on the prayer list, please telephone the church office. The list will begin anew at the start of each month. Please be generous. Model for God-loving boys and pupil of St. John Bosco, you died prematurely, but you had already attained mature spiritual wisdom. Your kindness won you many friends, but your love above all sought the Master who is present in our tabernacles. His praises you eucharistically sang. Make us holy like you, for the love of Jesus, our most loving Master. Amen. In honor of Rest in peace ‡ Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and may everlasting light shine upon them. Feast 10 March Attendance MQOP Saint George 87 / 258 43 Fifth Sunday of Lent “Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?” A Reflection From Our Pastor My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This weekend we celebrate the third Scrutiny with our Elect. The theme for this Sunday is Death and Resurrection: death to sin and resurrection to new life. Our first reading is the famous vision of the “dry bones” (Ezekiel 37:12 – 14). This is a foretaste of Easter— a proclamation of resurrection to new spiritual life, to the life of grace through the sacrament of baptism. Paul says: “But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness. If the Spirit of the One who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the One who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit dwelling in you” (Romans 8 – 11). The gospel passage is the story the raising of Lazarus (John 11:1 – 41). John alone tells this story. This is the last of the seven signs in the “Book of Signs” that is the first part of John’s gospel. The symbolic meaning of the story is evident in the words Jesus addressed to Martha: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he should die, will come to life; and those who live and believe in me will never die” (vs. 25 & 26). Through His death and resurrection, communicated to us in baptism, we have a true resurrection to the life of grace. Thus Jesus fulfills the role of the Messiah. Let us prepare ourselves to celebrate Easter with joy and hope. Fr. Joseph Ampatt Inside Our Parish Mary, Queen of Peace Sunday (3/09) Adult Education K-5 P.S.R. It is this personalized involvement that makes the work of the Society unique. This aid may take the form of intervention, consultation, or often through direct dollar or in-kind service. An essential precept of the Society's work is to provide help while conscientiously maintaining the confidentiality and dignity of those who are served. Some 12 million persons are helped annually by Vincentians in the United States. These are some of the services Vincentians provide for those who are poor and in need: Emergency financial assistance; Food programs; Services to those in any way challenged; Rent/mortgage assistance; Embracing the lonely, forgotten, and alienated. If you would like to become involved in this great ministry please telephone the church office (318) 752-5971. Mary, Queen of Peace’s Lenten Parish Retreat, “FINDING LIGHT AMID THE DARKNESS” Is this Sunday, 9 March starting at 3:00 p.m. with Fr. Pike Thomas of Saint Jude Catholic Church. The Gospel of John is filled with imagery of light and darkness and becomes a sort of mirror for us as we pick our way through life’s shadows. Fr. Pike says, “In the few hours we are together, I will invite you to use this Gospel to find and follow the Light.” Bring your Bibles so that we can meditate on the Scriptures in spiritual talks, common and individual prayer, and discussion. Schedule: Talks and discussion, Supper, Wrap-up talks, and Mass. With the help of everyone, we should easily reach our MQOP pledge goal of $ 39,000 and our SG pledge goal of $5,000. Let your gift to this year’s Appeal reflect your desire to act as God’s hands here in our community. If you need a brochure, pledge card, or return envelope, they can be found in the narthex. Please ask an usher if you do not find one available. Gifts can also be made on-line at www.dioshpt.org.
