millionaire from Philadelphia who used her fortune to help Indians
and black people, Katherine Drexel founded the Sisters of the
Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored and Xavier University
in New Orleans. She was born in Philadelphia and was given an
excellent education, she traveled widely. As a wealthy girl of the
period, she had a grand debut into society, but when she nursed her stepmother
through a 3-year terminal illness she saw that all the Drexel money could not buy
safety from pain or death, and her life took a profound turn. After much discussion
with Bishop O’Connor, she wrote in 1889, “The feast of St. Joseph brought me
the grace to give the remainder of my life to the Indians and the Colored.”
Newspaper headlines screamed “Gives Up Seven Million!”
After 3½ years of training, she and her first group of nuns opened a boarding
school in Santa Fe. A string of foundations followed. By 1942 she had a system of
black Catholic schools in 13 states, plus 40 mission centers, and 23 rural schools.
Segregationists harassed her work, even burning a school in Pennsylvania. In all,
she established 50 missions for Indians in 16 states.

Fourth Sunday of Lent
“Then Jesus said, ‘I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see,’”
A Reflection From Our Pastor
Dear Friends in Christ,
We are in the middle of Lent. Our reflections on Sundays of Lent have been focused on the fundamentals of our faith and on
our response to God’s call through baptism. On this 4th Sunday, the Church draws our attention on what Yahweh told prophet
Samuel: “I don’t see as people see; they look at the outward appearance, but I look at the heart.” (I Samuel 16:7) God was
looking for a young man to take the place of King Saul and the prophet was sent to the house of Jesse of Bethlehem. God was
not impressed by seven of the sons of Jesse, though each one of them had been very impressive in the sight of Samuel. The
gospel deals with the same theme of “seeing” (John 9:1 – 41) The blind man in the story not only gains his vision but also
comes to spiritual insight about Jesus. At the same time, the well educated Pharisees grew progressively blinder. Lent is for us
an invitation to renew our decision to see clearly: that is, to live by the light of faith. Jesus is light and truth to us.

with Fr. Pike Thomas of Saint Jude Catholic Church.
The Gospel of John is filled with imagery of light and
darkness and becomes a sort of mirror for us as we pick
our way through life’s shadows. Fr. Pike says, “In the
few hours we are together, I will invite you to use this
Gospel to find and follow the Light.” Bring your Bibles
so that we can meditate on the Scriptures in spiritual talks, common and
individual prayer, and discussion. Schedule: Talks and discussion 3:00 – 5:00
