Assessment, treatment and management of
offence-related paraphilias in sex offenders
One day workshop delivered by
Professor Derek Perkins, Ph.D.,
Psychological Services, Broadmoor High Secure Hospital
Thursday 24th February 2011
University of Central Lancashire
Organised by: Professor Jane L. Ireland, School of Psychology, University of Central Lancashire as
part of the Forensic Research Group Training Series
CONTENT: The workshop will provide participants with an overview of sexual offending, including
descriptive and theoretical aspects of child sexual abuse, sexual aggression against adults including rape,
and sexually motivated homicide. This will set the context for information on, and an opportunity to discuss,
current approaches to the role and implications of paraphilias and offence-related sexual interests within
sexual offending. This will include definitions, current theoretical perspectives on aetiology, approaches to
assessment, and options for treatment and management.
Participants will have the opportunity to consider and work on relevant case material, including examples
and issues from their own practice that they may wish to share. Specific methods for assessing
offence-related sexual interests and paraphilias will be presented, including the penile plethysmograph
(PPG). Approaches to the treatment and management of offence-related sexual interests, arousal and
fantasies will also be covered, including case examples of how this can be integrated into other work with
sex offender clients / patients.
