Astronomy Week One: 1. Students will be expected to type a 1-2 page paper discussing how “Astronomy is not Astrology”. This paper should discuss in detail both topics and discuss how Astronomy is scientific and theory-based, and how Astrology is based on superstition and handed-down practices. Topic should be detailed, properly referenced (citing sources in MLA-style), and double-spaced in Times New Roman 12point font. Please include a Cover Page and a separate Reference Page. Learn about Latitude and Longitude. Activities involved with writing the degrees of measurement based on Latitude and Longitude lines on Planet Earth. Students will start with Latitude, then Longitude, then both together, and then using both line dimensions for identifying locations and countries on Earth. 2. Students (in pairs) will draw their planet name from a basket and start researching the specific characteristics of their planet. Students must complete a detailed 3-4 paper discussing all of the details of their planet to include the following minimum elements: Size, Shape, Density, Color Gravity pull in comparison to Earth Distance from the Sun Time of Rotation (Day) Time of Revolution (Year) Atmospheric Conditions Prominent Elements found on the planet Satellites that have visited the planet Name Origin Discovery Importance Interesting and Unique Facts about your planet Again, all information must be properly referenced using MLA-style. This project must also include a visual of some sort that can be used to entice other people to come and visit your planet. **Consider yourself your planet’s Travel Agent, and you want others to visit your home. Make it interesting, exciting and amazing to visit your planet. You may choose to use a Powerpoint, a brochure (Microsoft Publisher or Word), a tri-fold board, a model or something else that is a visual aid to promote your fun planet. Rubric will follow to give you the point breakdown for the paper, the oral presentation and the visual display. Make this project great, and give your BEST! Due Date: September 17th- 18th, 2015
