Course Description:
Sources of marine pollution. Types of marine pollutants. Natural processes acting on spilled oil
(weathering). Containment and recovery of oil. Treatment of recovered oil. Shipboard oil pollution
contingency plan. Implementation of MARPOL 73/78 Convention. Control of oil from machinery.
Discharge criteria. Oil Record Book. Oil and hazardous material transfer operations. Rules for tankers
carrying oil in bulk.
Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:





Identify different sources of marine pollution.
Ensure compliance with pollution- prevention requirements.
Gain basic working knowledge of the relevant IMO conventions concerning protection of the
marine environment.
Know the precautions to be taken to prevent pollution of the marine environment.
Explain general requirements for tanker design, equipment and operational procedures.
