Welfare state regimes and the family
In the late 1990s Esping-Andersen returned to consider the criticism of his welfare regime
typology. The seminar discusses his response to critics, and examines his (re)consideration
of the importance of family in welfare state analysis.

Welfare State Restructuring and Change in the Nordic countries
What kind of welfare state emerged in the postwar period, and how do the
Nordic varieties differ from continental European and Anglo-American
varieties? How useful is the generalisation of one Nordic model of
social development? Are there similar responses to the crisis of the
welfare state across the Nordic area in the 1980s and 1990s?

Social Care in Welfare State Restructuring
Increasingly, the provision of social care – care for the very young and the very old – is
becoming an urgent issue for the welfare states in Western Europe. The seminar considers
the conceptualization of ‘care’ and ‘care regimes’ in welfare state analysis, and discusses
different policy approaches to social care.
