CEO Roundtable - Working with our Boards
Thursday, January 28, 2010
8:30 am - 10:30 am
While the old adage "when you've seen one foundation,
you've seen one foundation," remains true, it is also true
that one commonality shared by foundation CEOs is
managing a relationship with a board of directors or
board of trustees. In the case of corporate funders, this
may take the form of a manager of community relations
working with an internal committee or board. In all
cases, however, as CEOs we rarely have the final
authority for everything, and mange the leadership of our
organizations in partnerships with our boards.
Please join us for the winter CEO roundtable and a
discussion of how we each relate to, manage, and work
with our boards or oversight bodies. Hear from your
peers about their experiences with their boards, and
ways they have learned to structure conversations,
convey challenging news, or develop new directions and
initiatives.

SPIFFY Winter Roundtable - Technology: Friend or
Foe?
Thursday, February 11, 2010
12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Are all technological innovations good things? Are they
useful, or do they cause as many problems as they
"solve?" As small foundations, we often look for ways to
make our workload more efficient and lighter, but
sometimes the application of technology may not be the
most logical way to help either our grantees or ourselves,
and we wonder rightly if it's actually saving us time and
effort or adding one more thing to our plates.
Please join us for the Winter SPIFFY Roundtable. Our
overall theme for the 2009-2010 program year is
innovation, and this roundtable program will focus on the
uses of technology by small foundations and the positive
and challenging aspects of applying certain types of
technological innovations.
This will be a brown-bag lunch, so bring your lunch and
your questions. Beverages and dessert will be provided.

Reports
Amid the country's economic downturn, planned giving
levels by many education grantmakers declined last year.
A new analysis of trends in education philanthropy finds,
however, that a sizable minority of those surveyed said
they expected the grants paid out to hold steady,
compared with 2008. The report by the nonprofit
Grantmakers for Education also notes a growing interest
in collaboration among funders, as well as increased
attention to fueling educational innovations and providing
dollars to support advocacy and public-policy work.
Read Report
-------------A coalition of the nation's leading secular and faith-based
anti-hunger organizations released a report outlining nine
steps to eliminate childhood hunger. Among its
proposals, the report recommends strengthening income
supports and the nutritional safety net. The Roadmap to
End Childhood Hunger also urges policymakers to take
immediate steps such as reauthorizing child nutrition
programs and reforming unemployment insurance to
include part-time workers. The National Anti-Hunger
Organizations drafted the report in response to President
Obama's goal to end childhood hunger by 2015.

Breakthroughs in Shared Measurement and Social Impact
A new report by FSG Social Impact Advisors highlights a surprising new breakthrough
which is emerging in the social sector: a handful of innovative organizations have
developed web-based systems for reporting the performance, measuring the outcomes,
and coordinating the efforts of hundreds or even thousands of social enterprises within a
field. The nascent efforts foreshadow profound changes in the vision and effectiveness of
the entire nonprofit sector, revealing important lessons about the power of these
breakthroughs to promote a systemic and adaptive approach to solving social problems.
During his presentation, Mark Kramer of FSG Social Impact Advisors reviewed three
different innovations in shared measurement, including a) Shared measurement
platforms; b) Comparative performance systems; and c) Adaptive learning systems. He
also highlighted the eight common elements of success among the twenty systems that
FSG studied. A video of this program is available to AGF members at the Members Only
website.

The Case for General Operating Support
While the debate over the merits of project versus operating support has existed for
close to a century, foundations have always leaned toward project funding, with a much
smaller percentage going to operating support. However, recent surveys of funders have
concluded that general operating support yielded better results for foundations and
grantees alike. Click here to read the full article.

Foundation giving will likely decline by more than 10% in 2009, closer to the higher end
of the 8 to 13 percent range estimated by the Foundation Center earlier this year.
According to September 2009 survey findings released today in Foundations' Yearend Outlook for Giving and the Sector, foundation giving will also decline further
in 2010, as previously predicted by the Center.
Most Charitable Among Wealthy Have Highest Net Worth -- And Are Happier,
Too
Wealthy people who give away 10 percent or more of their income to charity tend to
build a higher net worth — and be happier — than other wealthy individuals who give
less, says Thomas J. Stanley in his new book, Stop Acting Rich … and Start Living
Like a Real Millionaire.
More for Mission Launches Portal of Mission Investment Opportunities
This month, More for Mission launched a new one-of-a-kind Members-Only portal of
mission investment opportunities to help their network of foundations more readily
identify potential investments that are a good match with their mission. Simplifying a
process that can sometimes seem overwhelming, especially to foundations that are new
to the field, the portal enables mission-driven investors to review the landscape of
investment opportunities across product types, themes and geographies. Accessible only
to More for Mission foundation members, the portal provides restricted access to
Cambridge Associates’ proprietary database of marketable and non-marketable MRI
managers across various asset classes along with strategies including community
investing, ESG investing and double bottom line real estate. The portal also provides
access to community investing opportunities in US Treasury certified community
development financial institutions (CDFIs) and National Credit Union Administration
(NCUA) low-income designated credit unions. More for Mission encourages missiondriven foundation investors to join their network and learn more about their new portal
of mission investing opportunities, an important step forward in making mission
investing an accessible strategy for all interested foundations.
Also from More for Mission, a new survey of 39 foundations in its network helps to
quantify the amount of assets respondents have in mission-related investments and
demonstrates that this practice is expected to continue to increase. According to the
survey’s findings, at the end of 2008, mission investments as a percentage of total
assets equaled nearly 5%. When projecting anticipated mission investments for 2009,
the percentage of assets rose to nearly 7%, resulting in a projected net increase of 40%
committed to mission investing over that 12 month period. The results signal
respondents’ expectation that they will continue to increase their commitment to this
emerging practice (See the survey analysis). The results affirmed the sense among
experts in the field that mission investing is becoming an established investment
objective of many leading foundations.
Twitter Partners with Nonprofit to Support Education
For the first time ever, Twitter has decided to formally partner with a charity as part of a

Francisco-based nonprofit which aims to empower millions of children in the developing
world through education. See a video about the partnership.
Camfed and Kiva in America’s Giving Challenge
Camfed, founded by 2005 Skoll social entrepreneur Ann Cotton, and Kiva, run by Skoll
social entrepreneurs Matt Flannery and Premal Shah, are among 50 organizations
competing in America's Giving Challenge. This is an initiative by Facebook's Causes,
PARADE Magazine and the Case Foundation. Organizations compete for a $50,000 prize,
which will be awarded to the group having the most people donating by November 6,
2009.
Church Donations Remain Resilient This Year, Study Finds
More than 70% of churches nationwide raised as much or more money in the first half of
this year as they did during the same period in 2008, according to a new study. The
study, based on 1,540 mostly Protestant congregations surveyed in August, found that
37% raised more and another 34% raised the same amount in the first six months of
2009 as they had in 2008. Less than a third reported a decline in donations.
The Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits, in partnership with the Virginia G. Piper
Charitable Trust, Arizona Community Foundation, McMiles Foundation and
Youngker Foundation, have created an online resource guide for nonprofits to access
the latest and most comprehensive information possible for stimulus grants and
resources in Arizona. In addition, the Alliance will be convening a number of Town Halls
across Arizona to foster collaboration in communities that enable nonprofits to access as
many of these funds for Arizona nonprofits as possible.
Prospecting: Big Fund Sees Hopeful Signs for Future
As the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund — which raises more money than all but two other
charities in the United States — enters the year-end giving season, its leaders say they
see some promising fundraising and giving trends despite the bleak economy, notes
Prospecting, The Chronicle’s fundraising column.

According to Tony Martignetti, author of Charity Registration: State-by-State
Guidelines for Compliance, as many as 90% of nonprofit groups are lacking
compliance with state registration laws that govern the reporting of donations. The
author discusses the issue on a special podcast from The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Understanding Donors Motivations 2009, a new study from the Center for
Philanthropy at Indiana University, shows that income and education - not geographic
location - have the most influence on how donors give. The data, divided into 7 U.S.

strongest motivation in giving. Read the full report. (This file is large; allow ample time

FAMILY FOUNDATION RESOURCES
The National Center for Family Philanthropy recently released Current Practices in
Family Foundations, the first-ever random survey of these practices in the field.
This ground-breaking report is available free for download on their website. The research
findings provide benchmarking information to help foundations assess their own
practices with those of their peers. This work is part of the National Center's Pursuit of
Excellence initiative to provide family foundations with data and an assessment process
to help them raise their own levels of performance. Pursuit of Excellence enables family
foundations to see themselves in terms of common practice as well as in light of
standards of excellence articulated by leaders in the field.
Time is of the Essence: Foundations and the Policies of Limited Life and

selected contemporary foundations (Lucille P. Markey Charitable Trust, Corella and
Bertram F. Bonner Foundation and Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust) to provide donors
and foundations with models for consideration in their own policies and planning in the
21st century.

Challenges to the Spirit...
The New Year is already providing unimaginable challenges.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti today as
the news of the horrific disaster caused by the Earthquake
continues to unfold. The scale of this disaster and the resulting
needs are frankly mind boggling. But I am struck by the stories
already emerging of how individuals and organizations are
working together. This is indeed a challenge to us all and will test our ability to be
nimble and flexible in our responses.
A special section of michiganfoundations.org lists disaster resources and a
number of organizations that need support as they respond to needs in Haiti. If
you have additional response organizations or resources to suggest, please email
them to info@michiganfoundations.org, so we can add them to this list. We also
welcome your ideas on how Michigan's philanthropic community can respond and
encourage you to share your plans for responding to the disaster by e-mailing
info@michiganfoundations.org. We will collect and share that information with all
our members as we receive it.
The resilience of the human spirit is also a big part of the story emerging from
across Michigan this week. I learned from the State Department of Education
yesterday that more than 75% of local school districts have signed on to the
education reform principles of Race to the Top - doing this in less than a month!
This is good news, and I commend these local school board leaders and school
superintendents for stepping up and recognizing that while the "ink is still drying"
on the fine print, the status quo is not acceptable for our children.
School districts have responded to the challenge and enabled Michigan to submit
a competitive application to Washington next week. While the opportunity to
obtain the federal funds is vital, this application and all of the work that has gone
into it has really demonstrated to us that we Michiganders can work collectively to
transform our state. As I wrote last month, this is a story that will continue to
unfold, and because education is such an important priority to Michigan's
foundation community we will continue to keep you posted.
An important ingredient to the success of our youth in education is access to a
listening ear - a mentor. In a briefing to the Michigan Community Services
Commission, the significant impact of the work of the more than 10,000
Featured Member Benefits
Michiganders who are active Mentors was documented by the evaluator for
Mentor Michigan. But we also learned that mentoring stops too soon. The need
for mentors for older youth is greater than ever. Being that January is National
Mentor Month, I encourage you to visit the Mentor Michigan website and learn
how we can all support mentors and be involved in mentoring.
The challenges are great but as we hear the stories coming from Haiti and our
communities across Michigan, they can be met. Please let me know how CMF
can help you in your response.

January 2010
Dear Nina,
It was wonderful seeing so many of you last month at the annual
meeting and luncheon. We've received excellent feedback about
both the premeeting workshop on how funders can assist
organizations considering a merger or strategic alliance, and on
the annual meeting program itself. If you attended and have not
yet completed our quick meeting evaluation please do so as soon
as possible. Here is the link. This kind of feedback is
enormously helpful.
Many of you enjoyed our keynote speaker Kathleen Enright's
remarks on how grantmakers can help nonprofits emerge
stronger in 2010. Her advice about increasing support to highperforming nonprofits you have a history with, and giving them
general operating support to do what they do best, really
resonated with a lot of you.
So now we turn to a new year, which will include a full docket of
programs (see the January & February schedule below),
expanded services for our members, as well as tracking a
number of issues that may relate to your grantmaking. Front and
center of course is the fact that New Jersey will get a new
Governor in just a few weeks. We have already started reaching
out to representatives of the new administration and look forward
to developing an ongoing dialogue. We will keep you posted and
look forward to scheduling our Conversations with the Cabinet
program series with the new leaders in the coming months.
For all of us at CNJG, we wish you all a healthy, effective
grantmaking year, and look forward to seeing you at a Council
program very soon.
Sincerely,
Nina Stack

2010 Census - Funders Taking Action
The 2010 Census faces a number of challenges, most importantly:
 Increasing diversity of population and growth in immigrant population
 Post-9/11 and “Internet age” concerns about data confidentiality
 Displacement related to economic downturn
Upstate NY funders can play a role in ensuring a fair and accurate count in
2010. The Funders Census Initiative (FCI), is a program of the national
affinity group, Funders Committee for Civic Participation. This working
group seeks to stimulate interest in the 2010 Census among funders and their
grantees, particularly focused on hard-to-count communities. This includes
those living in poverty and immigrant populations—both increasing in our
region over the past 10 years.

The Philanthropist (an editorial)
A new television show portrays the act of philanthropy as an individual effort
by a rich man to make small differences in the lives of those less fortunate.
Really an adventure show, it dramatizes the need around the world and
simplifies the interaction of the main character with those he aids. In the
words of Steve Gunderson, President of the Council on Foundations, “The
Philanthropist is to philanthropy what the Pink Panther is to police work.”
What a shame that this inspiring idea doesn’t address the real causes of hunger

and poverty in the world and, instead, applauds the hero’s ability to
circumvent third world government obstructions, rather than enlisting them as
partners. This show is pure escapism and should be viewed as such. It is
certainly not a realistic or positive view of the field that we call philanthropy.

Philanthropy News
New $50 Million Social Innovation Fund
The Corporation for National and Community Service plans to award grants ranging from $5
million to $10 million in the 2010 fiscal year to “intermediary grantmaking organizations” in order
to support innovative nonprofit agencies. Read about it here. Public comment for the draft
guidelines for this federal funding will be accepted through January 15, 2010. View the draft

Foundation Leaders and Strategy
A new report from the Center for Effective Philanthropy takes a look at “more strategic”
foundation leaders as opposed to “less strategic” ones. Essentials of Foundation Strategy
identifies several "defining elements" of more strategic leaders. They include :
• An external focus that incorporates information from outside the foundation such as grantees
and consultants
• An ability to explain how using foundation resources will help achieve specified goals
The report also notes the impact of using a strategic plan for the foundation; communications
strategies; and assessing the foundation’s performance regularly. Read the full report (allow
ample time to load).
Corporate Philanthropy and the Recession
The recession has of course affected corporate philanthropy – with some unexpected results.
The Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP) has released the 2009 edition of
Giving in Numbers, its annual report analyzing benchmarking data from corporate donors. Over
half (53%) of surveyed companies increased the level of their giving from 2007 to 2008; noncash giving significantly increased as a result of the recession. An executive summary and the
full report are available here. An article in USA Today describes how companies like Target are
taking advantage of social networking tools like Facebook to give the public a voice in their
giving and build their online presence. Read the full article. And, this feature in The Financial
Post details results from using outcomes-based giving to measure return on philanthropic
investments.

Member News!
New Members and Member Transitions
There will be some new faces at upcoming GWP programs. The Christine and
William Maley Charitable Foundation became a new member this fall, and
GWP is also pleased to announce two new guest members: The McGuinn
Family Foundation and the Blood Science Foundation. Please join us in
welcoming all of them.
In other member news, a new team is in place at Columbia Gas of
Pennsylvania: Mike Marcus, Lisa Carmean and Rachel Vaness are now
managing the organization’s communications and community relations activities.
Also this fall, Mary Lee Gannon was named president of St. Margaret
Foundation; she was previously President and CEO of Forbes Health
Foundation.
Elizabeth J. Tata, Vice President and Secretary of Laurel Foundation since
January 2008, has been promoted to the position of President and Secretary as
of January 1, 2010. Betty joined the Laurel Foundation in 2001 after a 28-year
career at Alcoa, including developing and subsequently managing its Education
and Training Center. Timothy M. Inglis, who formerly held the position of
President, will continue to serve Laurel Foundation as Treasurer and as a
Director.
This fall also saw transitions for a number of GWP members, including the
departures of Mary Navarro, former senior program officer, from The Heinz
Endowments and Kathy McCauley from Staunton Farm Foundation. Mary
continues to teach in the Heinz College Arts Management program at CMU, and
Kathy has returned to her previous work as a consultant. As of December, Amy
Snider joined the United Way of Allegheny County, moving from her previous
position as program officer at the Roy A. Hunt Foundation. GWP looks forward
to staying in touch with all prior members in their new roles.
In an update on a former member: Mary Phan-Gruber (former executive director
of Birmingham Foundation) recently joined the Allegheny County Department of
Human Services as the Deputy Administrator of the Area Agency on Aging.
Finally, Velma Monteiro-Tribble, Chief Operating Officer and Assistant Treasurer
of the Alcoa Foundation, is taking early retirement as of January 1, 2010. She
looks forward to cutting back on international travel, remaining in the Pittsburgh
area, and staying active in the community. Please join GWP in extending best
wishes to Velma for a fulfilling and active retirement!

Congratulations to Mary Anne Dunham, Board Chair of the Women and Girls
Foundation
and recipient of the 19th annual Athena Award. The Athena Award recognizes
women in our community who demonstrate excellence, creativity and initiative in
their business profession, contribute time and energy to improving the quality of
life for others in the community and actively assist women in realizing their full
leadership potential.
Members in Action
The Buncher Family Foundation recently made a leadership commitment
totaling $500,000 to support construction of a new Miracle Field in Murrysville.
Miracle Fields are fully accessible and designed to enable children with and
without disabilities to use them; they include features such as bases and
baselines that light up for children who are deaf, and bases that vibrate for
children with visual impairments. The municipality of Murrysville has set aside
almost five acres for the new field and the Buncher Family Foundation contributed
$250,000 in July to support its construction. The foundation also announced a
challenge grant of an additional $250,000 to be awarded when $2 million is raised
to complete the funding.
Community Foundation of Greene County (CFGC) recently received
confirmation that it met the requirements set by the Council on Foundations’
National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations program, the “gold standard”
for community foundations. The National Standards Seal provides assurance to
CFGC’s donors, financial and legal advisors and the public that their charitable
dollars are invested wisely. Congratulations to CFGC’s staff and board!

a look at giving patterns and trends among private and community foundations;
they also examine how women's funds have changed the field of philanthropy.
Principles Workbook: Steering Your Board Toward Good Governance and

Independent Sector and BoardSource developed this new workbook together.
It is designed to help boards and executive staff assess their organizations and
identify next steps to improve governance.
Learning from Madoff: Lessons for Foundation Boards
Over 80% of foundations that lost assets to Bernard Madoff's fraudulent
investments had fewer than five trustees on their boards. In this publication, the
National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy investigates whether there
was any relationship between board composition and potential exposure to
Madoff's Ponzi scheme.
Benchmarks Study/ Foundations Report
No surprise at this headline: 2008 was a tough year on endowments. The
Commonfund Institute recently completed a national study showing that
grantmakers’ endowments sank by 26 percent last year. As recent as 2007,
foundation endowments typically earned an average of 9.9 percent. However,
according to William Jarvis, managing director at Commonfund Institute,
foundations had higher returns on their investments than the overall market.

Estate Tax, IRA Rollover to Expire
Two provisions of importance to the nonprofit community
have been allowed to lapse by Congress. Both the estate
tax and IRA Charitable Rollover will expire at midnight.
While the House passed a permanent extension of the
estate tax at its 2009 levels, the Senate has failed to
approve even a two-month extension of the measure.
Leaders hope to pass a bill retroactive to the beginning of
the year in 2010 but, if nothing is done, the estate tax will
disappear for twelve months before returning in 2011 with
a $1million exemption level and 55% tax rate.
Tell Congress your thoughts
The IRA Rollover was also supported in the House as part
of a $31 billion tax extenders act. While similar action
stalled in the Senate, both Senate Finance Committee
Chairman Max Baucus and ranking member Charles
Grassley have pledged to remedy the situation as soon as
possible in 2010.
Evaluation: A Way to Learn and Improve
Evaluation in Philanthropy: Perspectives from the Field, a

provides examples of the ideas being put into practice by
foundations.

Contributions Professionals (ACCP) shared insights and data about
where the field of corporate contributions is heading at Philanthropy
Northwest's 2009 Annual Conference in Stevenson, WA. Review the
complete presentation here.
Holland America supports On Deck for the Cure
This year, Holland America Line surpassed the $1.8
million mark in contributions for Susan G. Komen
for the Cure's On Deck for the Cure program.
Holland America Line has regularly partnered with
Susan G. Komen for the Cure through the ship-based
program, where guests are invited to make donations
and participate in a 5k walk on each cruise. Recently,
Holland America Line Seattle partnered with Susan G. Komen for the Cure
affiliates to host the fourth annual On Deck for the Cure Walk in Seattle,
collectively raising $4,400 to support breast cancer research.
Puget Sound Energy Rock the Bulb Tour
From July to October, Puget Sound Energy is holding events throughout the
Puget Sound area that encourage customers to exchange incandescent light
bulbs for compact fluorescent light bulbs. Since July, the Rock the Bulb
program has exchanged 426,515 bulbs, and saved 98,524,965 kWh of
electricity and $18,340,145 on energy bills. Volunteers are also going door-todoor to exchange bulbs and inform customers about reducing home energy use.
PPL Montana celebrates $1 million in giving
This fall, PPL Montana’s Community Fund will cross the $1 million mark in
grants awarded to nonprofits throughout the state. Members of the PPL
Montana Community Fund Advisory Board, comprised of 18 individuals from
the company and the community, award grants to nonprofit organizations twice
a year. According to Julia Murphy, a financial consultant with RBC Wealth
Management in Billings and a member of the advisory board, “This program is
saying ‘It’s important to go to the ballet, the art museum or learn about energy
conservation.’ It’s creating a better place to live through a very holistic
approach.” Since the grant program’s inception four years ago, PPL Montana
has given awards to 145 organizations addressing issues related to education,
the environment and economic development.
2009 Diversity Elite 60 announced

companies on this year's list, which included Philanthropy
Northwest members Bank of America and Wells Fargo,
implemented strategies to partner with minority-based and Hispanic-owned
suppliers and reach more Hispanic customers. Comcast, another Philanthropy
Northwest member, was also listed.
Regence Foundation awards health care grants
The Regence Foundation recently awarded nearly
$250,000 to Northwest nonprofits. The grants support
nonprofit programs with innovative plans to improve
health care quality and increase access to services.
Four nonprofits received grants, including

Findings from a recent survey by the Wyoming

nonprofits and charitable giving. Of the 135 nonprofit

In this series of posts on Duke's Center for Strategic Philanthropy and Civil Society

consulting to nonprofits striving to expand programs with proven impact. She explores
the value of evaluation, what constitutes an "evidence-based program," standards for
evidence, and more.
Venture Philanthropy Partners Chair on Social Outcomes
Here, VPP's Chair Mario Morino expresses his concern about the increased focus on
evaluation, saying "I am increasingly worried that the vast majority of funders and
nonprofits are achieving, at best, marginal benefit from their efforts to implement
outcomes thinking." He argues: "
The main reason the dialogue on social outcomes is off track is because we have failed
to keep our eyes fixed on the ends we are trying to advance. Every ounce of our effort
on social outcomes should be with one end in mind: helping nonprofits create greater
benefits for the people and causes they serve. Period.
Most outcomes efforts today have drifted far from that end. Too often, measurement
has become an end in and of itself."

American Expectations for Foundations
According to a new report (pdf) from the Philanthropy Awareness Initiative, while
Americans generally have a high regard (and high expectations) for foundations, they
have little knowledge of how grantmaking organizations make a difference in
communities.
The findings show that of "engaged Americans" - defined as adults who hold either a
staff or volunteer leadership role in an organization that works on social issues - only
20 percent could name an example of how a foundation has impacted their community.
Despite this lack of awareness, however, 75 percent of respondents said that it would
be detrimental to lose foundations.
Jim Canales of the James Irvine Foundation asserts that the "survey underscores the
need for us to proactively communicate about how foundation support of our nonprofit
partners adds value to society."
Report on Foundation Lifespan Policies
This Aspen Institute report argues that spend-down provisions and limitations on
foundation life should be seen as important options, among many other viable choices,
for donors and foundations to consider in drafting charters and by-laws.

Private Donations to Public Officials?
A recent grant of $250,000 to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Peter Gorman
has sparked debate in North Carolina. As reported in the Charlotte Observer, the C.D.
Spangler Foundation awarded the grant to Gorman for "personal growth and development" as
part of nearly $3.7 million given to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
North Carolina State University's Tom Alsbury, associate professor of educational leadership
and policy studies, was disturbed by the grant, asserting that "no public official should be
beholden to a private group."
Foundation trustee Anna Nelson defended the grant, saying "it's for the benefit of the school
system, but through (Gorman's) work." Read the full article.

Mark Yusko, founder of Morgan Creek Capital Management, and keynote speaker at SECF's
2009 Conference on Investing for Foundations, pledged $35 million to the University of Notre
Dame. View the full list.

The Role of Evaluation in Trustee Decision-Making
Making Evaluation Work: Tools and Tips for More Effective Grantmaking
February 2, 2010
2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Eastern
Join us for this free webinar on how evaluation can better serve trustee needs. We will provide
real-life examples of evaluation tools and techniques that provide trustees with actionable
knowledge that will support your organization’s mission.
Evaluation can provide critically useful information for making strategic decisions. Yet,
understanding what evaluation is, how it can contribute to the organization’s health and
effectiveness, and how it can be accomplished efficiently are not frequently hot topics of
conversation with organization trustees.
With funding and support from The James Irvine Foundation, FSG Social Impact Advisors
interviewed dozens of foundation trustees, CEOs and evaluation experts to develop a set of
tools and resources designed to help leaders answer the following questions: How do
foundation trustees use evaluation? What types of evaluation information are most helpful to
trustees? How can evaluation results help them make decisions?
For more information or to register, visit the meeting webpage or contact Suzanna Stribling,
suzanna@secf.org or (404) 524-0911.

What Qualities Make Foundation
Leaders Strategic?
Essentials of Foundation Strategy, a new publication
from the Center for Effective Philanthropy, compares
the characteristics of "more strategic" foundation
leaders vs. "less strategic" ones.
According to the findings, more strategic leaders possess two
"defining elements":
1. They are externally focused, making decisions based
on information from sources outside their foundation, including
grantees, stakeholders and consultants.
2. They are able to clearly explain how the use of resources will
contribute to the achievement of goals
The report also identifies four "key characteristics" of more
strategic leaders:
· They regularly reference a board-approved, written strategic plan
· They publicly communicate their strategy, through a websit,
blogging or other social media
· They are proactive in their grantmaking, often directly contacting
potential grantees to establish a relationship
· They assess performance using indicators to evaluate all the
foundation's strategies

While the full force of the economic downturn
reaches nonprofits, many are being encouraged by
funders, the public and the news media alike to
consider opportunities to save money by
collaborating on programs and sharing resources for
back office operations.
Likewise, many in the grantmaking field are doing similar soulsearching to increase the efficiency of their giving, and also to avoid
being perceived as disingenuous by the very nonprofits they may be
asking to make sacrifices.
Fortunately for grantmakers exploring opportunities to collaborate,
Grantcraft's new guide titled "Funder Collaboratives: Why and
How Funders Work Together" offers insights from the field on
how grantmaking organizations can pool their resources to give
more effectively and produce better outcomes in the communities
they work.
Highlights include:

Both the Tax Extenders Act of 2009 and the estate tax
legislation, after being passed in the House, are
awaiting consideration in the Senate. The Council on
Foundations reports that because the Senate is unlikely
to address these issues until work on health care is complete, it's
possible that Congress will delay resolution until 2010, and then
extend the provisions retroactively. Read the full articles.
Q&A
Question: Do you desire a beneficial partnership for
your organization? Do you dream of having a
partnership that will "get your organization's name
out there" in a good way? Are you looking to
collaborate to increase your resources? If you
answered yes to these questions, you are not alone.
Answer: According to The Power of Partnership by Plexus
Consulting Group, 86% of the respondents to their questionnaire
said the most important accomplishment of a strategic partnership
is 'to achieve a goal that the association could not achieve alone."
To respondents, that goal most often is to:
· Increase membership
· Increase resources
· Increase revenue
· Enhance visibility and/or brand
· Expand current markets (or develop new markets)
· Minimize the risk inherent in any innovation
· Maximize use of resources
