_________
1.
The 2008/2009 cyclone season
The 2008/2009 cyclone season can be described as an active season, with 12 cyclonic
disturbances forming in the South-West Indian Ocean, two of which were in the Mozambique
Channel. Ten of these disturbances met the criteria for named storms:
Three were classified as moderate tropical storms (Asma, Bernard, Eric);
Five were classified as severe tropical storms (Cinda, Dongo, Hina, Izilda, Jade);
Two reached the intense tropical cyclone stage (Fanele, Gael).
Three of these disturbances affected Madagascar:
–
Moderate Tropical Storm Eric, which was felt mostly in the east-central part of the
island, made landfall in Fénerive-Est District and headed out to sea in the Indian Ocean
by way of Brickaville District. During the storm’s passage, the Sainte-Marie synoptic
station was heavily damaged;
–
Intense Tropical Cyclone Fanele, in the Mozambique Channel, affected the southern
part of the island. It made landfall in Morondava District and headed out to sea in the
Indian Ocean in Vaingaindrano District. During the storm’s passage, the Morondava
synoptic station was heavily damaged;
–
Severe Tropical Storm Jade in the Indian Ocean made landfall to the south of the town
of Antalaha and went out to sea to the south of the town of Brickaville.
We should note that two other systems affected the weather in Madagascar, although they
did not cross the island:
–
Intense Tropical Cyclone Gael, in the Indian Ocean, caused heavy rain in Toamasina,
where more than 222 mm of rain was recorded in a three-day period;
RA I/TCC-XIX/Doc. 4.2(4), p. 2
–
2.
Severe Tropical Storm Izilda, in the Mozambique Channel, affected the weather in the
southern part of the island: 53.5 mm of rain was recorded in Morombe.
The 2009/2010 cyclone season
The 2009/2010 cyclone season was a prolonged one, as it started in August 2009 and
continued until May 2010.
In terms of activity, the 2009/10 cyclone season was a very active one, with 16 cyclonic
disturbances detected in the South-West Indian Ocean. Ten of them met the criteria for named
storms, including:
Two moderate tropical storms (Fami, Bongani);
Three severe tropical storms (Hubert, Joel, David);
Three tropical cyclones (Imani, Anja, Cleo);
One intense tropical cyclone (Gelane);
One very intense tropical cyclone (Edzanie).
It should be noted that two of these storms developed in the Mozambique Channel (Fami
and Joel).
Three of these systems affected Madagascar, in particular the southern part of the island:
–
Tropical Storm Fami in the Mozambique Channel made landfall near Belo on the coast
and headed out to sea in Nosy Varika District;
–
Severe Tropical Storm Hubert in the Indian Ocean made landfall south of the town of
Mananjary and headed out to sea in the Mozambique Channel near the town of
Ampanihy;
–
Severe Tropical Storm Joel brushed the extreme southern part of the island.
