Vocabulary Journal Requirements Find seven words each week out of one of your English books or other course textbooks. For each word you will do the following: 1. Choose a word that you do not already know the meaning to, the more difficult the word, the better 2. Spell correctly 3. Cite the source (text, author, title, and page #) 4. Quote its use 5. Give definition 6. Explain how you arrived at that definition (each of these methods must be used at least two times per week) A. Context Clues -- tell type of clue used and explain how you figured out the definition. B. Textbook or dictionary definition – tell what page the definition was from or what dictionary you referenced C. Word Parts – Explain the meaning of the prefix, root word and/or suffix 7. Use the word at least twice in a paragraph and underline the word 8. Read one paragraph out loud twice a month, without prior notice, to the class so that we can all benefit from each other's expanded vocabulary Important notes: Keep up on this weekly. It should be ready every Tuesday (starting with January 15th) as you might be called to read a paragraph that day. If you are uncomfortable reading out loud, practice beforehand the paragraph that you would like to read. This is due February 21st and it is worth 100 points toward your final grade, so it is important that you follow all eight of these steps for each of the seven words, every week, so that you can receive all of those 100 points. You will end up with 42 total words. Have fun expanding your vocabulary.
