INFORMER 1 Vanderburg United Methodist Church MARCH 2015 I know many of you wish I could with accuracy, say, “Spring is in the air!” Not quite yet. However, despite the cold, Spring DOES begin just around the corner. Spring brings to mind images of growth rejuvenation, and signs of an earth reborn. Easter reminds us of new life, energy, excitement. N.O.W. is the time for each of us to discover our place of service in the community we call Vanderburg United Methodist Church. We’ve spent months rearranging, becoming a bit more streamlined. N.O.W. is the time for us to turn our attention (from an administrative point of view) to resuscitating the three committees which, along with Worship, should be the backbone of our organization…Nurture, Outreach, and Witness (or N.O.W. for short). The Book of Discipline gives us very little specifics on how these committees are to operate. In general…Nurture is our focus inward. It is our care for our own. Nurture will involve visitation teams for our shut-ins, those in nursing care facilities, and hospitals. It is remembering to care for our Military personnel, college students, and others who are at a distance. It is coordinating with others to show appreciation to all ages from our youngest to our oldest and all in between. It is about our prayer ministries. Outreach is about our focus to the community in which we are planted and beyond. It is missions to the schools, the homeless, the struggling single mothers. It is reaching out to our Veterans. It is participating in or sponsoring mission teams to areas in our community, our region and throughout the world. It is about our community meals. Witness is twofold. Witness works with the other two, as well as all areas of our congregation to witness to our Lord and Savior, but it is also witnessing to who we are as a congregation. Everything from our website and our other online communication to the sign out front. It is about welcoming guests and making sure we follow up and find meaningful ways to include them in our congregation. It is about radical hospitality to the groups that use our facilities, from sports organizations to scouts to A.A. groups. It is about advertising and marketing in a very real sense. In short, it is about bringing people into the Vanderburg Community and into the Kingdom of God. While we have “elected” members of these organizations, anyone who feels led is welcome to come join. We will be having organizational meetings soon. Please spend some time in prayer and consider volunteering in any of these areas where you might have an interest or some God given talent to contribute to the cause. Just contact one of the pastors or staff and give them your name and what area(s) you are interested in. It’s time for us to grow deeper in our commitment as a church to care for our own, to reach out to care for others and to welcome all to our community of faith. N.O.W. is the time for each of us to serve… Blessings, Pastor Tommy 1809 Charlotte Hwy. We, as humans, have a tendency to fall into repetition and live within our comfort zone. If we carry that attitude into worship then the church service can become quite mundane. So occasionally I like to go and visit other churches where I may be able to get some fresh ideas. Luckily two of my pastor friends had been appointed to lead local churches in the area last July. I had planned on visiting during the summer but was unable to pull myself away from my home church until the Fall. Vanderburg was one of those facilities. My daughter and I came together and my wife was supposed to meet us here before the eleven o’clock service; although, she ended up arriving late. As my daughter and I were walking through the fellowship hall I recognized that I was in my normal apparel (shorts and flip-flops). For a moment I felt as if I needed to run home and change clothes until I ran into a friend from the Emmaus community. She directed me to the “Master Pastor’s” office who led me on a quick tour of the building. During our visit we were greeted by many and welcomed by all. I was reminded a valuable lesson that day. As the bible says in Romans 15:7 “Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.” We are called to welcome all no matter how they are dressed or what they look like. Thank you for warmly welcoming me that first visit and continuing to make me feel welcome now that I am here. I look forward to serving with you. In Christ’s love, Pastor Tingalls PRAYER CHAIN 4 In addition to the Phone Tree and Facebook, members of Vanderburg are starting a Prayer Chain as an additional way to get prayer requests out to the congregation. It would require that you call the next person on the list and if that person is not available, leave a message and call the following person. If you are interested in being included, please call the office at 704-663-1690 or Saundra Smith at 704-663-1663. ACOLYTE TRAINING The next Acolyte training will be on March 22, 2015, right after the 11:00 worship service. The training will be for children 1st through 5th grades. Any questions, please contact Angela Edmonds at 704-746-6566. MISSIONS Community Table will be March 7 from 8 to 10 a.m. The meal consists of pancakes, sausage, eggs, fruit, juices, milk and coffee. Please come and enjoy the fellowship and invite friends and neighbors. Backpack Children Feeding hungry children: The generous donation of food for the 10 back pack children was received with much gratitude. It filled up the shelves of the Triplett UMC! This program stops for the summer months. Therefore, we are being asked for just one more delivery. The last Sunday to get your donations in will be March 15th. We will continue the program again in the August/September time frame. Be on the lookout for an announcement at that time. Thank you again for your generosity! Debbie Crouch Aluminum Can Collection Vanderburg continues to collect aluminum drink cans. They are sold and the monies go toward our missions projects. A container is in the fellowship hall for you to place empty, rinsed cans. If anyone is able to take these cans to the recycle center in Statesville for us, please contact Brenda Byrd. 5 MARCH BIRTHDAYS 5 Morgan Ketchie Jack Kaufman Joey Neil 6 Chloe Winecoff 7 Kevin Winecoff 8 David Blair Laurie Furr 9 Austin Dagenhart David Robinson Chandler Benfield 10 Jeremy Erwin Michael Johnson Tom Pierce 11 Randa Templeton 12 Payne Edmonds Makenzye Harward 20 Charles Snyder 23 Michael Kaufman 24 Beverly Mayhew 26 Bobby Furr Jessica Josey Tyler Peltier Gina Sharp Karla Winecoff Dena Younts 27 Ruth Doherty 28 Zach Meadows Lynn Neill Ranae Hedrick 29 Susan Fogleman 31 David Wilhelm Darlene Setzer 13 Adam Neill 14 Caroline Bottoms 15 Susan McCarter John Van Rooyen MARCH ANNIVERSARIES 3- Ronald & Sherry Armstrong 16 Michael Harwell Sam Lucas Peggy Garwood 11 Jeanie & Sheldon Carmen 16 Morgan & Billy Newton 17 Terry Corson James Bush 17 David & Beata Hance 22 Bradley & Megan Smith 25 - Barry & Karla Winecoff 27 - Jimmy & Vickie Brooks 19 Trevor Crisp Kristine Ann Hedrick 6 NURTURE These are addresses of members who are shut-ins, in nursing homes, college students and in the military. HAPPY HATTERS The Happy Hatters enjoyed a delicious lunch at Applebee’s on February 12, 2015. There were 10 members present. The group sent Valentines to 16 shut-ins from Vanderburg. Brenda Byrd won the prize for the most correct answers to the Valentine Trivia Game. Marie Hedrick made individual heart-shaped cakes with chocolate hearts on top with ice cream. Marie was given a gift of Valentine’s candy as a thank you for all the baking she does for the group. 8 Vanderburg Youth I would like to thank our youth workers for their time and dedication and their passion to share the Gospel with our youth aged children. As Youth Director I would appreciate your continued prayers for the members of this ministry team: Stacey Sherrill, Shannon Waggoner, Mark and Anita McRacken. Also be in prayer for the parents of the youth that attend our Sunday Fellowship Meetings. Whether we are 18 or 20, the group is engaged and attentive and hungry for what Jesus, the church and the world has to offer. As I said before, these young people are very special. Some of them missed the Pay It Forward campaign start and insisted we give them $10 too! Everyone is having fun with this and a lot of thought is going into their projects. Our 6th through 8th graders will be attending Kaleidoscope 2015 in April. It is my prayer that everyone that wants to go will get to go, because even at this age calendars are pretty full! Confirmation Lessons will start soon. If you are interested or know of someone that would like to attend; even if they might not want to join the church at this point, please let me know and extend an invitation to them. This will be a wonderful evangelism opportunity for those already committed to the class to invite friends! Young Adult Fellowship A group of young adults get together every Wednesday at 6pm in the library. It is a lively meeting of the minds, sharing and of course lots of fun … as we are all still YOUNG (some just at heart!) Some nights we bring dinner and eat as we visit and discuss. A family-style cooking event was cancelled due to snow but we will be making spaghetti soon. If you happen to not hear us on a given Wednesday we might be ‘cooking in the kitchen’. The group will be snow tubing in the mountains the first Saturday in March. The plan is also to celebrate Spring with a Canopy Tour in the mountains near Asheville, NC. REMEMBER that the group is willing and able to assist with tasks around your house or yard FREE OF CHARGE. They would treasure the opportunity to be a blessing to others. 9 CHILDREN’S MINISTRY Calling all parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friendly neighbors Palm Sunday, March 29, 2015 at 4pm the Easter Bunny would have “dropped” a NUMBER of eggs on the church grounds and we would love the help of all children to get them up and into baskets. Enjoy some refreshments and fellowship while the Easter Egg Hunt activities are in full swing. At 5pm the choir will present an Easter Cantata. You will definitely want to hear that. UPCOMING Events: April 26 Honoring Veterans and Flag Retirement Ceremony by Boy Scouts. After the ceremony we will serve refreshments and children will present Veterans with appreciation cards for their service and sacrifice. May 9 Outreach: My Sister’s House. When you do your Spring cleaning remember this campaign. We will meet on May 9th to put together boxes of items and agape gifts.
