Waihi Ladies golf report Champion of Champions November 2012 Waihi Ladies fared extremely well at the Bay of Plenty Area Champion of Champions played this month. Club champions in Silver, Bronze 1, and Bronze 1 Runners up from all 38 clubs in the area played at Tauranga on Friday November 19 to determine “the Champion of Champions” in each division. Waihi’s Strokeplay champions Carol Leary (Silver), and Mavis Bruce (Bronze 1) won the Una Wickham Silver and Bronze Championship trophy for the best combined nett score over 36 holes. Mavis Bruce won the Bronze 1 Championship trophy for the best gross score over 36 holes, and also the Bronze 1 Championship trophy for the best nett score over 36 holes. The Bronze 2 and 3 Thames Valley Area Champion of Champions event was played over 18 holes at Waihi on Friday November 9. Representing Waihi were Helen Moloney ( Bronze 2 champion) Jacquie Bain ( Bronze 2 Runner up) and Kay Still ( Bronze 3 runner up) substituting Gay Bainbridge, the Bronze 3 champion who was unavailable for play. All three players returned excellent scores, and their combined 213 points gave them second place behind the winning Paeroa team’s 210 points with Jacquie Bain being runner up in her division. At the Tauranga Champion of Champions Prize giving, Waihi player Val Webber was presented with the Aotearoa trophy for the Bay of Plenty/Thames Valley Area’s best nett score in the New Zealand– wide Home Links competition, her 64 nett score gaining her 10th place in the country. On Saturday 17 November the Waihi Leader Player of the Week final was played in cloudy, conditions with a few light drizzly showers. The ladies’ winner was Kathy Ashton (67), runner-up Karen Lee (68). Winner of the men’s competition was Bill Newland (66), runner-up Ray Fisher (67). Nan Hoggard
