JEFF CALLAHAN-BEDFORD, IN
Active as AD
Jeff was an outstanding athlete in both baseball and football at Bedford North Lawrence High School. Jeff was named to the Hoosier
Hills All-Conference baseball team three times. He was named All-State his junior year and was an IHSBCA All-Star in 1987. During his years
as a Bedford baseball player he was the winning pitcher 26 times, he was also an excellent hitter. He still holds numerous records at Bedford
N.L. High School.
He accepted a baseball scholarship to Vanderbilt University and also worked in the football program for several years. Jeff was active
as a coach in the Bedford baseball program from 1992 to 1997. He also was involved with coaching football. In 2003 he became the AD at
Bedford. Jeff has been very involved with the summer youth baseball programs in the Bedford area.
STEVE SCHROER – EVANSVILLE, IN
Retired
Steve is a 1963 graduate of Evansville North High School where he played for Coach Ed Wessel. He went 28-1 as a pitcher in his
high school career with 3 no-hitters and he was a part of the 1962 mythical state championship team. He was drafted out of high school in the
1st round by the Washington Senators (Texas Rangers) and was a member / alternate for the 1963 LA Dodgers World Championship team.
His big league career consisted of 8 seasons where he was mainly a part of AA and AAA organizations. The Senators called him up
twice to the big club during that time. He also spent two of those years playing on teams while serving in the military. When his playing career
was over he attended the University of Evansville and received an Associate’s Degree. He followed up that degree with an MBA from Princeton.

CONTRIBUTOR BIOGRAPHIES
GLENN JOHNSON-KOKOMO
Deceased
Glenn was involved with baseball in many ways and impacted many lives during his work with the game he loved. He served as an
assistant coach at Taylor High School for eight years, he then ran the baseball program at Grace College for six years. He was very active in
leading trips into foreign countries where he would teach baseball along with sharing his strong religious convictions. Glenn went to Uganda for
15 years teaching the game of baseball and sharing his faith. Some people in that nation refer to him as the “Father of Baseball in Uganda.
He was also involved in UPI Camps in Italy, Rimini, Puerto Rico, Ontario, and British Columbia. Glenn gave his life to help people to
grow in their knowledge of the game of baseball and to his Lord, Jesus Christ. He touch many lives through his love for the game and his
personal faith.
DICK FREEMAN-MISHAWAKA
Retired
Dick became a registered umpire in 1959 and began working high school games. In those days a high school team would only played
10 games or so. When the IHSAA began the state baseball tourney in 1968 he saw high school baseball be come very popular and the number
games increase.
During the first IHSAA baseball tourney umpired up to the semi-state level. In the years that followed he worked 17 Sectional, 12
Regionals, 6 semi-states, and 3 state finals. (1970-1975-1984)
Dick also umpired summer high school baseball and American Legion games. He also worked games for University of Notre Dame
and Bethel College. Unfortunately, an injury in a traffic accident ended his umpiring career.
MARK RIGGINS-LOOGOOTEE, IN
Active
Mark is a 1975 graduate of Loogootee High School and attended Murray State University for three years before being drafted by the
St. Louis Cardinals in 1979. At MSU he was a three time all conference pitcher. He then played five seasons in the minor leagues with different
stops within the Cardinals organization.
In 1984 Mark assumed the role of a minor league coach with the Cardinals and in 1990 he moved to the AAA Louisville Redbirds as
the pitching coach. In 1995 he was elevated to the major league level when skipper Joe Torre asked him to serve on the Cardinals top club as
the pitching coach. From 1996 – 2007 he served in the capacity of minor league pitching coordinator for the Cardinals and was the recipient of
the George Kissell award for excellence and achievement in player development. He currently serves as the minor league pitching coordinator
for the Cincinnati Reds organization after a four-year stint in the same role with the Chicago Cubs.

COACHING BIOGRAPHIES
DAVE BISCHOFF-NEW HAVEN
Active
Dave graduated from Bellmont High School in 1975 where he played several sports. Coach Dave went on to play college baseball at
IPFW and graduated in 1980. His coaching career began at Norwell High School where he was an assistant coach until 1985 when he became
the head coach a New Haven High School.
Dave’s New Haven teams have won 527 games, 10 Sectionals, 3 Regional and made 3 Final Four appearances. He was the North
All-Star coach in the 2010 North/South series. Coach Dave has had two of his players go on to play Pro ball and 51 of his players have played
college baseball. Coach Bischoff is most proud that 22 of his former players have coached at the high school level and four are coaching at the
college level.
Dave served the IHSBCA by being a District Rep for 10 years, then moved on to the association vice-president role for three years
and was the IHSBCA President in 2005-06.
BOB SHINKAN-MUNSTER
Active
Coach Shinkan has been working in the baseball coaches box for 26 years. He played and coached under Mike Niksic (Hall of
Famer). There have been only two head baseball coaches at Munster High School. Bob has won more that 520 games in his tenure at Munster.
Bob’s wins have taken his Mustangs to nine Sectional titles, four Regional’s, 1 Semi-state, and a State Championship in 2002.
Bob the 2002 State COTY and can count 17 other local COTY awards. He was an North All-Star coach in 2001 and has been very
involved in work on various IHSBCA committees. Eight of his players have been selected as North All-Stars, 10 of his players have earned AllState honors while 14 have been named to the All-Academic teams. Four of his players have played
AL RABE-JEFFERSONVILLE & SCOTTSBURG
Active
Al has been involved in coaching baseball for 29 Years. He started his coaching at Castle High School 1980 then went to Boonville in
1990. After three years at Boonville he was asked to coach at Jeffersonville. In 2012 this graduate of the Univ. of Evansville took over the
Scottsburg baseball program. During Al’s 29 years of coaching high school baseball he has won 496 games.
Coach Rabe has won 12 Sectionals, 5 Regional and two Semi-State championships plus numerous conference crowns. Three times
he has been voted as District Coach of the Year. He has been Vice-President of the IHSBCA for three years a was the IHSBCA President in
2009-2010. He also served as an IHSBCA District Rep for 10 years. Al was a North/South All-Star coach in 2002.
ANDY OWEN-FT. WAYNE
Retired.
Coach Owen spent 18 years coaching high school baseball in Ft. Wayne. A graduate of Ft. Wayne Concordia H.S. and Indiana U. he
began his coaching career in 1984. Andy began as an assistant coach at Ft. Wayne Elmhurst in 1984, he then became an assistant coach at
Ft. Wayne Snider in 1987 then became the head coach in 1993. Coach Owen continued to lead the Panther program thru 2011. During his
coaching years he won 359 games. His championships included five Sectionals, two Regional, two Semi-States, and two State championships.
His ball club also won 8 conference titles.
Twice Coach Owen was State COTY. Andy also worked in the Ft. Wayne summer Wildcat League for over 10 years. He has served
on the IHSBCA Poll Panel and also active ABCA member.
LOU GIOVANINI-VENICE, FL
Retired
Lou graduated from Clinton H.S. and then attended Indiana State U. where he played both baseball and basketball. After college Lou
coaches at Columbus east H.S. for 23 years. His East baseball teams won 513 and lost only 146. He won 14 Sectionals, 9 Regionals, and
3 Semi-States. Lou’s baseball teams won Hoosier Hills Conference titles 8 times. Nine times he was selected as the conference Coach of the
Year. His baseball teams won 20 or more games 15 times. Lou was a coach of the IHSBCA South All-Stars in 1979. He served on many
IHSBCA committees and also served as a District Rep for 5 years.
Coach Giovanini also was the head basketball coach at Columbus East. He took both his baseball and basketball teams to the State
Finals.

GARY DEHAVEN-BENTON CENTRAL
Retired
Gary is a native on Huntington, Indiana and served in the coaching profession for 42 years with 37 of those being in the role of a head
coach. He spent four seasons at Hamilton High School, 7 years at Kankakee Valley High School, and the last 26 campaigns at Benton Central
High School.
During those times he compiled a 601 win and 429 loss record. He won 15 sectional titles, 1 regional crown, and 12 conference
championships. This included IHSBCA District COTY honors 4 times and conference COTY 9 times. He coached 3 players that were drafted
and sent numerous players to the collegiate level. Eight of his players were selected Indiana All-Stars and he has served as an All-Star coach.
He also served the IHSBCA in various committee and district representative roles.
CHIP O’NEIL-SOUTH BEND ST. JOSEPH AND SOUTH BEND CLAY
Retired
Coach O’Neil spent 33 years as a head coach. 11 of those years were at South Bend St. Joseph and 22 of those years were at South
Bend Clay. During that time he had a record of 545 wins, 352 losses, and 6 ties. He won 7 sectional championships, 3 regional titles, and 1
Northern Indiana Conference crown.
He is a graduate of LaPorte High School and Ball State University. He has been a district rep for the IHSBCA, an All – Star Coach,
and been named conference coach of the year.
PHIL WEBSTER-CAMBY, IN
Retired
Coach Phil spent 27 years coaching high school baseball, one year at New Salem and 26 at Decatur Central. During his years of of
coaching he won 538 games and lost 249. He won 12 Sectionals, 2 Regional, 1 Semi-State, and a State championship. Phil also won 18
conference championships.
He graduated from high school in Pittsburgh, PA and then went on to pitch for Milligan College for 4 years. Phil was very involved with
the IHSBCA serving on numerous committees and coaching in the 2008 All-Star series. Twenty three of his players went on to play college
baseball.
Phil was conference COTY ten times and was the 2008 IHSBCA COTY in class 4A.
