About War Child
War Child is an award winning international charity which works with local partner organisations to support
children acutely affected by conflict. War Child helps provide protection for children who are acutely marginalized
by the effects of conflict in Iraq, Afghanistan, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African

War Child is looking for an exceptional volunteer to co-ordinate the Schools Programme as part of the
Campaigns/Advocacy team, which reports directly to the CEO.
The role would be particularly suitable for a person who has an enthusiasm for working with young people, the
ability to work patiently and calmly in challenging environments and takes exceptional initiative.
Role description
 Work within schools, delivering presentations and workshops so that UK school students learn about and
actively engage with the issues concerning the most marginalised children in conflict affected states
 Be the point of contact for schools working with War Child, providing and distributing resources, attending
events and promoting and advising on fundraising activities;
 Maintain strong relationships with schools and organizations on behalf of the charity
 Work alongside the Policy Officer and Communications Officer to finalise and help put in place War Child UK’s
5-year strategy for advocacy;
 Work closely with the Policy Officer to plan and carry out youth advocacy events targeting key politicians and
decision makers;
 Launch and manage the expansion of the current programme to incorporate Student Ambassadors in London
universities. Assist with recruitment and training.
 Research potential funding opportunities to further develop the programme, and take the lead on drafting and
submitting proposals;
 Develop and build relationships with relevant external organisations;
 Assist with the process of evaluating and reporting on the success of the Schools Programme
Knowledge, skills and experience
Essential
 A good understanding of how charities can successfully work with young people in the education sector and
the UK secondary education system
 Experience of working with young people
 A high level of written and verbal communication
 Experience of drafting formal documents with good formal writing skills
 Experience of working in a team environment
 Proven ability to effectively project manage and implement plans successfully
 Proven ability to demonstrate exceptional initiative and confidence to work independently

 Highly proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel and Powerpoint)
Desirable
 Exposure / experience in (some or all of the following areas) the education sector, lobbying and government
advocacy, public speaking, drafting funding proposals, basic budget management and account keeping
 A basic understanding of international development issues
 Experience of public speaking
 Knowledge of the UK Citizenship curriculum
What will the volunteer gain from the role
 Experience of managing a large scale project within a busy and dynamic environment
 A chance to participate in wider campaigning and advocacy through teamwork with Policy and
Communications sectors
 A chance to develop valuable transferable skills in public speaking, youth engagement, budget management,
strategy development and fundraising
Duration and Commitment
We would need a minimum commitment of 6 months, starting in August 2011. Ideally we would like someone 5
days a week, but will consider 3/4 days a week.
Travel and Expenses
This role would be based in War Child’s offices in Kentish Town, London but would involve some travel to local
schools. This is a voluntary position and hence unpaid. However, travel expenses (London zone 1-6) and lunch (£4
per day) will be reimbursed.

 Interviews will be held on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st July at our Kentish Town office.
 The successful applicant will need to undergo a CRB check as they will be working in schools
