Family of William J. Tarvin and Cassandra Ann Offutt Tarvin
Recently, I added a note to the Tarvin Family Association website concerning my gr gr grandmother
Cassandra Ann Offutt m. to William J. Tarvin. While making a choice on where to send it ------ it
disappeared; have no idea if anyone received this. Anyway, all the Links to the William J. Tarvin family
list the genealogy that my son Dr. Stephen Jeffrey “Jeff” Crews posted on the internet about 1996. It seems
they located their ancestor from this and added that child’s lineage.
Jeff also sent our Houston Co., GA. documents on George Tarvin to Mr. Walter Tarvin by postal mail.
When he saw that Carol Middleton had been seeking this information for over 30 years, he sent her a few
more of these documents that he had overlooked. Then Carol asked him if she could include this William J.
Tarvin Line to her “Turvins of Walton Co.” It was never updated; Carol died in 2000. The following is
what the note was about.

Married by Rev. Jabez Marshall16 pastor of the Old Kiokee Baptist Church-Established in 1772.in Appling,
Georgia. Old Kiokee Baptist Church was founded by his grandfather Rev. Daniel Marshall (1706-1784).

OLD KIOKEE BAPTIST CHURCH
“We were priviledged to be able to attend a wedding in this church in May 2005. There is no heat and no air
conditioning. Unless you can count funeral fans as air conditioning. The wide plank floors and hard rough wooden
pews serve as a reminder of life for worshipers over 225 years ago. The grounds here are tree shaded and well
manicured.
There are numerous picnic tables and plenty of space for outdoor acitvities. The church is no longer used for weekly
services, but, is used for weddings and "homecoming" services.
Kiokee Baptist Church was founded by Rev. Daniel Marshall in 1772 in Appling, Georgia. The Reverend Marshall was
an itinerant preacher from Connecticut who worked his way down the East Coast after New England's "Great
Awakening" , a spiritual revivial begun in the 1730's.
Kiokee Baptist Church members still meet in Appling but at a modern, new sanctuary.”
Note: Janette S. Kelley relates in “Our Heritage,” “around 1770, a sizable group of people crossed the Savannah River
into Columbia County and settled along the Kiokee Creek. Daniel Marshall, a Baptist Preacher, led the group and
established the first Baptist Church in Georgia, “Kiokee,” which is still active today” (1983). Daniel Marshall and his
son Abraham were two of the eleven chaplains in the Patriot army

William J. Tarvin was a Georgian who moved to New Echota in 1829 to trade with the Cherokees. He
built a dwelling house and store on New Town Road. Tarvin served as postmaster of New Echota from
1831 - 1841. The family also included his wife Cassandra and eight children. The site of Tarvin’s house,
store, and spring are now on private property. In 1833 Tarvin expanded his New Echota business to also
include food and lodging. In a newspaper advertisement he offered, "as good fare as the country affords . .
. supper, lodging, horse feed, and breakfast, $1.00"

Bullock Co., GA, youngest of 8 children born to WILLIAM S. BACON (JOHN, JOHN, EDMUND,
WILLIAM) b. 29 Jan. 1732, d. 25 Sept. 1817, m. 1 st in 1760, Henrico Co., VA, Agnes Hobson, b. 4 July
1740 in Lunenburg, VA, d. 6 Dec. 1819, Augusta , Richmond Co., GA, daughter of NICHOLAS
HOBSON and AGNES C. GOODE. WILLIAM S. and AGNES were active in the Revolutionary War.
WILLIAM was a Son of Liberty and a member of the Provincial Congress from St. John’s Parish, GA, in
1777, later Liberty Co.,GA. He is an authenticated patriot of the Revolutionary War for Public Service.

ALFRED LAFAYETTE TARVIN, Pvt. H 39th Regt. GA, son of WILLIAM J.TARVIN and
CASSANDRA ANN OFFUTT TARVIN was our Confederate patriot for membership in the Mary
Custis Lee - 17th Virginia Regt. #7 Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, R.E. Lee
Camp Hall, Alexandria, VA.
December, 1863, when 5,593 prisoners – most of whom were captured by Grant’s army at Lookout
Mountain and Missionary Ridge – arrived at Rock Island. A great deal of suffering characterized this first
group. They were far from their homes; moreover, the coldness of the climate had left them half-frozen,
for on the day of their arrival the temperature dropped to thirty-two degrees below zero. This condition
was aggravated at the very outset by an epidemic of dreaded smallpox. Prison doctors found ninety-four
cases of this disease in the group, and all had been exposed to it. Doctors faced the responsibility without hospital wards or adequate medicines. Civil War Prisons, Rock Island Barracks, pp. 4; 48-59,

This Prison was the North’s Abbeville. Black soldiers guarded these white prisoners. “Wanton shooting
of prisoners and the unspeakable treachery of guards form about as black a chapter of crime as any ever
recorded, and it is one phase of our prison life not found in the government records of Rock Island… I
defy any one to produce any authentic record of punishment meted out to any guard at Rock Island for
having shot a prisoner or for having shot into the barracks during the night afte ‘taps,’ ….” (p.23) From:

“Alfred L. Tarvin was possibly a Confederate spy.
Alfred Lafayette went through all this and died of pneumonia after repairing a barn roof in the rain. The
barn can still be seen from the Cave Spring Rd. in Vann’s Valley (1995).

WILLIAM and NATHANIEL PEARRE are probably the sons of Nathaniel and ANNA COLEMAN
PEARRE, m. DEC 22, 1789.
Note:
The PEARRE /PEARCE family came from Maryland to North Carolina and then to Georgia. Landed at
Savannah and fought in the Revolutionary War. JOHN, JESSE, and WILLIAM were in the first Battalion
Minute Men, June 1777, these and NATHANIEL, JOSHUA, JR. and SETH are listed in Knight’s Roster of
the American Revolution, also, JAMES PEARCE of Franklin and Richland County’s GA
STEPHEN PEARCE entertained MARQUIS de LAFAYETTE when he visited Georgia in 1830.
MAJOR WILLIAM PEARRE was a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1787. MAJOR
WILLIAM and NATHANIEL were brothers and each married Miss Offutt.

Now lives at MR. EZEKIEL HARRIS’ house near Augusta.” (Ga. Gazette & Augusta Chronicle
1786-1799).
Note: “…the Ezekiel Harris House Museum is a fine dwelling house in Augusta, Ga., built by
Ezekiel Harris (1757-1828), a tobacco merchant. Ezekiel Harris built the house in 1797,
and lived there until about 1807,when due to financial problems he lost the house and
and property, including a village around it that he named Harrisburg. He and his family
moved to Wilkes County, Georgia where he died in 1828. Ezekiel Harris’ wife was named
