Lesson Plan
Unit: __5___Genetics_ Topic: _Genetic Transmission____ Framework: ___5.3___
ELA Framework: W5.10.8, 5.11.8, 5.12.8
CCSS: WHST 10.10, 11.10, 12.10
Author: Stephen Matthews
 What concept within the framework is to be developed? What is the specific objective of the
lesson?
o Discuss the transmission of characteristics of animals from one generation to the next.
o Identify factors in the selection of breeding animals for producers to gain desired
animal products.
 What do students probably already know about the content? What prior knowledge needs to
be activated?
o Students will have very little to no prior knowledge of the subject and rely on personal
experiences (where do I get my hair color, eyes, etc.)
o They probably understand that not all traits are passed from one generation to the next.
 Is there potential for misconception?
o They may have the misconception that certain traits are always passed down to the
next generation (horned cow and horned bull may not produce horned calf).
 What should students be able to do at the end of the lesson?
o Apply scientific principles related to animal genetics
o Apply scientific principles related to animal genetics
o Describe/ explain scientific principles related to heredity.
o Construct model to depict basic concept of DNA
 What resources are available to develop the concept?
o Internet
o Semen books
o Modern Livestock and Poultry text
 What questions will focus students’ thinking on the concept and help guide learning?
o Where do you get your height?
o Where do you get your hair color?
 How will I assess students’ understanding of the essential concepts and major details?
1. If a red animal which is homozygous for red (RR) is mated with a white animal which is
homozygous for white (WW), what will the offspring be?
a. Red
b. White
c. Roan
d. Black
2. What is a dominant gene?
Gene that hides the effect of the recessive gene
3. Give an example.

What Students Will Do
Students will take a pre-test with
Brainstorming the vocabulary terms covered in
Vocabulary
lesson and put vocabulary terms to
check
use in sentence structure
Students will take notes on lecture,
with a column on the left for words
and a column on the right for
drawings and diagrams.
During
Two-column
notes
What Teacher Will Do
Observe students in class and make
sure all students are on task.
Teacher will present lesson using
power point and CEV material.
Teacher will present several
scenarios using Punnett square .
Students will create a model of
DNA.
Students will use Punnett square to
understand heredity.
During the last five minutes of class Read each student’s response to
hand students note cards to
the exit slips to determine if the

students comprehended the lesson.
After
Exit Slips
Ask the students to complete the
following summarization of the
lesson: Why is it important to
understand dominant versus
recessive genes?
