Spanish I Syllabus

Course Description: This beginning Spanish language course is design to give
students an introduction to the principles of pronunciation, conversation essentials of
grammar, written composition, and reading of materials with appropriate difficulty. In
addition to working toward a solid foundation in basic grammar, vocabulary, and
pronunciation the student will learn how to read simple, authentic Spanish materials, list,
describe, ask and answer question, and express opinions to defend them in a variety of
oral and written activities.
Text: ¿Y Tú? Part 1
Course Objective: At the end of the year students will be able to have basic
knowledge of communication in the foreign language while they demonstrate literacy in
all four essential skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will also be
able to observe and identify everyday cultural practices of the foreign language being
studied. Students will learn some aspects of foreign cultures such as daily life, education,
history, geography, government, economics, and art.
Attendance: You will be expected to obtain the corresponding homework or class
assignments for any day that you miss. Plan ahead and complete any class work before
your return to class. In case of an un-planned absence such as illness or a death in the
family, you will have the same amount of days you missed from the time you return to
school to finish and turn in any homework and/tests. If you plan on missing a day, please
let me know ahead of time so that we can schedule a time for make up work and/or test.
Grading: The following scale will determine grades for the class:

Daily-------------------------------------20% (Discipline, Participation, Homework)
Quizzes----------------------------------30%
Mid-Term-------------------------------5%
Final-------------------------------------5%
Homework: You will seldom have homework in this class, but when you do it will be
due at the beginning of class. If you complete the work during class time you will not
have homework.
