Further Contribution to Lower Emission in China,
Continental Launches Three New Production Lines
 In Changchun three new production lines for sensors will be launched
 To meet the stricter emission regulations of China market
 Production milestone of 30th millionth Knock Sensor in China
Regensburg, Changchun/China, September 26, 2012. The international automotive
supplier Continental holds a ceremony in Changchun to launch three new production lines at
the same day: NOx Sensors, High Temperature Sensors and Canister Purge Solenoid 6 of
Sensors & Actuators Business Unit. All these products and technologies support the stricter
emission regulations in China. In addition, the launch of these three new production lines is
combined with the celebration of the 30 millionth Knock Sensor - produced in China. Overall,
Continental continues its growth path in China as it is demonstrated by the expansion of
production lines in Changchun and adding new facilities as recently announced for Jiading
and Wuhu.
The NOx sensor enables the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) control of the NOx storage
catalytic converter and the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system as accurately as
required by future emissions legislation. As today’s only mass production supplier of NOx
sensors with a background of 14 years development experience, Continental has won the
coveted 2010 PACE award and produced over six million NOx sensors so far. In Continental,
China is the only country besides Germany where NOx sensors are produced. The annual
local production capacity is over 500k units. The high temperature sensor (HTS) is a newly
developed product based on thermocouple technology which can achieve accuracy of ±1%
and response time of 6s @10 m/s for temperature measurement in the exhaust stream. It is
complementary to the NOx sensor, enabling modern Exhaust Systems to comply with
today’s and future emission control requirements. The 6th generation canister purge solenoid
(CPS6) is designed to enable the fuel vapor management for state-of-the-art combustion

engines, especially helping downsized turbocharged powertrains with their specific
requirements in purge time and pressure. The CPS6 production line in Changchun is the
first installation globally with a maximum capacity of over 1 million pieces per year.
Mr. Mathias Miedreich, Head of the Exhaust & Emission Sensors segment within the
Continental Business Unit Sensors & Actuators stated: “As the Euro IV Emission standard
will be officially implemented in China from July 1st, 2013 onwards, we see a huge demand of
products and solutions for exhaust and emission reduction. Continental has invested heavily
in R&D to keep the technical leader position. Continental, a key player in the automotive
industry for energy-saving and emission reduction, is committed to better serve its customers
in China with high technology products and solutions for lower emission.”
30 millionth Knock Sensor produced in China
The production of Knock Sensors in China started 10 years ago and it is now delivered to 38
local customers as well as 19 overseas customers, including Japan, Indonesia, Australia,
Thailand, Iran, Austria, Hungary and USA. With outstanding quality and advanced
technology of Knock Sensor, Continental enjoys the market leadership not only in China but
also globally. The production capacity is close to 12 million units per year. Meanwhile,
Continental is dedicated to the new and innovative products and technologies. Continental
developed jointly with the European Center of Expertise on a new generation of Knock
Sensor.
Established in 1995, Continental Automotive Changchun Co., Ltd. is the largest
manufacturing and R&D location in Continental China with over 3,000 employees. With the
strong local development capability, Continental Automotive Changchun is aiming to provide
customers with localized products and solutions with first class quality. In October 2011, the
construction of a second plant in Changchun was started to meet the rapid business growth
of Continental in China and globally.
