WINCHESTER’S MILITARY MUSEUMS
An event organised by The Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum
“WHAT WERE UK’S GLOBAL
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
IN JANUARY 1916”
AN EVENING TALK BY DR ROB JOHNSON
AT 6.15 PM TUESDAY 19 JANUARY 2016
IN THE KINCAID GALLERY, RGJ (RIFLES) MUSEUM
By December 1915 the Allied situation on all fronts was extremely concerning. Two major
offensives on the Western Front had failed with heavy losses and without any appreciable
impact on the German front line. On the Eastern front the Germans had made significant
territorial gains in Russia. Bulgaria, fighting against the Allies, had over-run Serbia and
Montenegro. The Gallipoli campaign had ended in total failure. In Mesopotamia, British
forces were under siege in Kut. What were the Allies to do? What were the UK’s strategic
options and what were UK’s global strategic objectives in January 1916?
Dr Rob Johnson is a former regular officer in The Devonshire and Dorset Regiment. He is
now a senior lecturer in history at Oxford University, specialising in strategy and strategic
thinking, and the First World War.
This is the eighth talk in a series marking the centenary of events during the First World War.
Tickets for the talk cost £15 per person (£12.50 for Friends of the Museum). They must
