WINCHESTER’S MILITARY MUSEUMS An event organised by The Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum “SIR COLIN CAMPBELL AND THE SIEGE OF LUCKNOW” AN EVENING TALK BY ADRIAN GREENWOOD AT 6.15 PM TUESDAY 24 NOVEMBER 2015 IN THE KINCAID GALLERY, RGJ (RIFLES) MUSEUM Sir Colin Campbell, a former officer in the 60th (Royal American) Regiment (1813-18), and later Lord Clyde, landed in Calcutta on 13 August 1857 to assume the appointment of Commander-in-Chief in India. Lord Canning was the Governor-General. The Indian Mutiny had begun on 10 May and disaster had followed disaster. Delhi was in the hands of the mutineers and Lucknow was under siege. On 2 July Sir Henry Lawrence, the Chief Commissioner of Oudh, was mortally wounded during the defence of the Residency. A relief column eventually reached the defenders at the end of September and then themselves became defenders. A second column with Campbell at its head fought its way into Lucknow in November and evacuated the garrison. In March 1858 a British force, including the 2nd and 3rd Battalion, The Rifle Brigade, successfully re-occupied the city. Three members of the 2nd Battalion were awarded Victoria Crosses for their gallantry during the re-occupation. Adrian Greenwood, a graduate of Oxford University, and dealer in rare books, has recently spent four years researching and writing a book about the life of Colin Campbell, Lord Clyde, titled Victoria’s Scottish Lion, which was published earlier this year. During his talk he will speak about Sir Colin’s distinguished career and, in particular, about the siege of Lucknow. He will also be offering signed copies of his book for sale. Tickets for the talk cost £15 per person (£12.50 for Friends of the Museum). They must be purchased in advance by post (cheque to ‘RGJ Museum’), over the telephone (credit/debit card), or in person from: The Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum, Peninsula Barracks, Romsey Road, Winchester, Hants, SO23 8TS Tel: 01962 828549 e-mail: curator@rgjmuseum.co.uk The Royal Green Jackets (Rifles) Museum is located off the Romsey Road (A3090/B3040), 100 metres from the Great Hall, Winchester.
