DESCRIPTION
What motivates or compels us to leave our homes
and travel to distant lands? In particular, how do
our vocations influence our interactions with
foreign peoples and cultures? The U.Va. Library’s
international collections – reflecting the
adventurous lives and passions of diplomats,
soldiers, missionaries, writers, and others – offer
fascinating answers. Items on display include
original letters written by Thomas Jefferson while
in France, drawings of the West African coast by a
19th-century missionary, a rare, lavishly illustrated
edition of Lawrence of Arabia’s Seven Pillars of
Wisdom (1926), a translation by Pearl Buck of a
classic Chinese novel, documents by Mobil Oil
employees on Middle East ventures, and Afghan
jewelry and daggers purchased by an American
army officer in 1950s Kabul. Collaboratively
curated by scholars, students, and librarians, the
exhibition provides a glimpse into the ways that
global collections inspire current and future
researchers.

An Army of
100,000,000':
Celebrating 100
Years of
Government
Information at
U.Va.
LOCATION

DESCRIPTION
The U.S. government has a long history of
working with libraries to ensure that citizens have
access to government information and
publications. In 1813 Congress authorized the
distribution of its journals and other publications
to certain libraries, colleges and universities in
each state and territory [3 Stat. 140]. The U.S.
federal government depository library program
was formally established in 1860, and in 1910
U.Va.’s Alderman Library was given the
designation. An exhibition in the Small Special
Collections Library, “’An Army of 100,000,000’:
100 Years of Government Information at U.Va.”
celebrates the centennial of U.Va. being a federal
government depository library. The exhibit
presents government publications from 1910,
which was also a period when the government’s
“Committee on Public Information’s Division of
Pictorial Publicity” was encouraging citizens to
support the World War I effort. The exhibit
includes posters, pamphlets, and other materials
that document the government’s public relations
blitz before, during, and after World War I.

Assessing the
diets of
modern and
ancient
humans
LOCATION

Library
(Clark Hall)
DESCRIPTION
Fundamental to the understanding of human history
is the ability to make interpretations about an
ancient population based on limited information.
Within artifacts can be information, for example,
concerning incidence of disease, genetic defects, and
nutrition. We have analyzed hair from both modern
and ancient individuals to show a wide diversity in
the levels of seafood, corn-fed beef, and other grains
in diet. Using stable isotope tracers, new information
regarding historical figures (George Washington,
1799 AD; Edgar Allen Poe, 1849 AD) to perhaps the
most ancient of mummies, the Chinchorro of Chile
(more than 5000 BC) as well as the Moche of Peru
(500 AD) and the best preserved mummy, the
Neolithic Ice Man of the Oetztaler Alps (3200 BC), has
been deciphered. Not only can the understanding
ancient human communities and their environments
be accomplished, but insights into modern American
diets have recently been established. Presented by
Environmental Science Professor Stephen A. Macko.

research. In this presentation, librarian Jean
Cooper demonstrates some of the electronic

Freedom Riders
Culbreth
Theatre
Acclaimed documentarian Stanley Nelson returns
to the Virginia Film Festival with the story of the
more than four hundred Americans who, in 1961,
stared down the dangers of Deep South racial
tensions to make a statement abot segregation.
Based on the book Freedom Riders: 1961 and the
Struggle for Racial Justice by Raymond Arsenault,
the film offers interviews with many of the
individuals involved, from the journalists who
covered it and politicians who stood against it, to
the riders themselves, who overcame pressure
from all sides to earn the attention of the federal
government in their struggle to desegregate public
highway transit. Discussion moderated by Larry
Sabato (U.Va.) with Dion Diamond Sr. and Joan
Mulholland, original members of the original
Freedom Riders movement, and director Stanley
Nelson.

history of various student group on Grounds to
