SABANCI UNIVERSITY 2011 SUMMER SCHOOL GLOBALIZATION AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS ________________________________________________________________________ Course Description In this age of globalization, understanding politics requires a global perspective. This course provides an introduction to the study of international relations, with a special focus on the issues raised by globalization. The course begins by examining the historical evolution of the global system from different theoretical perspectives. Students then study the contemporary politics surrounding the emergence of globalizing processes and issues including global security, international trade and production, global money and finance, global ecology, and global culture. Particular emphasis is given to the thesis that the forces of globalization are increasingly constraining and overpowering nation-states and democratic governments by “de-nationalizing” and homogenizing economies and cultures.
