Dear Parent(s) and Student,
Congratulations! You have been given the opportunity to participate in the Sophomore Honors English program for
the 2014-2015 school year. Please note that there will be various responsibilities that accompany your acceptance
and continued participation in the program.
The first of these responsibilities is that each student must complete the reading assignments for the summer. The
students will be responsible for reading both The Scarlet Letter and The Great Gatsby. A study guide will be given
for help in guiding students through the reading of the books, but there will be no other assignments for the books
prior to the beginning of the school year.
The second of these responsibilities is in regards to the student maintaining at least a C by the completion of the
course. Please be aware that failure to maintain a C may result in placement in English III the following year.
Additionally, you must achieve a cumulative B average in order to be eligible for the Senior AP Honors Course,
which is a requirement of Lorain County Community College.
As per a new policy for the 2011-2012 school year, any student who has maintained at least a C average WILL
NOT be permitted to drop the course during the school year. The student will have to remain in the honors
program until the end of the year and switch to the regular English III class the following school year. If you have
questions regarding participation in the course, please contact the guidance dept. at 440-748-5220.
Please read, sign, and return one copy of this letter to the high school office in care of Mrs. Passerrello (room 201)
no later than June 2nd. The signatures of both the parent(s) and student are necessary for placement in the
program.
