2015 Merit Badge Offerings Below is a list of merit badges being offered at Merit Badge University. Prerequisite work is listed in the parentheses after the name. It is strongly recommended that each scout acquire the merit badge book for their badge before coming. Openings listed at http://www2.semo.edu/apo *The number(s) next to the merit badge are the prerequisites that need to be done before coming to MBU* Automotive Maintence (#10c, 11d, 12) This merit badge enables scouts to understand why certain periodic maintenance is required to keep their vehicles in tip-top shape. Chemistry (#4a) Scouts will explore how chemistry affects all of the aspects of our lives and the impacts it can have the world. Citizenship in the Community(#3 & 7) Scouts will learn the importance of being a good citizen by helping them understand the importance of making decisions about their community through their elected officials. Citizenship in the Nation (#2 & 3) Scouts will examine and evaluate the importance and role of the American government and the nation’s people. Citizenship in the World (#7) Scouts will learn about the workings and the importance of foreign affairs, including trade, war, and diplomacy. Various world organizations are also discussed. Communications (#4, 5, & 7) Communication is a very important key to leadership. Scouts will develop their skills in oral and written communication in both individual and group settings. Chess (none) Scouts learn strategy, technique, and patience of the game of chess Digital Technology(none) Scouts will get an in depth look on technology and how it is used in our everyday lives. Electricity (#2, 8, & 9) Scouts will have a “shocking” good time learning about the fundamentals of electricity and how it is safely used. Farm Mechanics (#3, 4, & 5) Scouts will learn the fundamentals about the tools and modern machines involved in the agriculture business. Geocaching(#7) Geocaching describes a hiding place on planet Earth - a hiding place you can find using a GPS unit. Geology (none) Scouts will learn the materials that make up Earth, the processes that change it, and the history of how things happened, including human civilization, which depends on natural materials for existence. Law (#4 & 6) Scouts taking this badge will learn this history and importance of laws and the judicial system as well discovering the public’s perception on Law. Life Saving (#1a) Scouts will learn how to assist those involved in water accidents, the basic knowledge of rescue techniques, the skills to perform them, and the judgment to know when and how to act so that they can be prepared for emergencies. Mining in Society (#1 & 7) Scouts will learn the importance and safety of the mining industry and some of the elements that are commonly used every day and where they come from. Oceanography (#7 & 8) Join our Counselor as he takes an educational trip to the beach without ever leaving Cape Girardeau. Scouts will learn about oceans through the eyes of science. Radio (none) Scouts will learn the different kinds of radio along with how it is used to relay information and communication from one place to another. Emergency Preparedness (#8) Teaches scout to be prepared by learning the actions that can be helpful and needed before, during, and after an emergency. Engineering (none) Engineers use both science and technology to turn ideas into reality, devising all sorts of things, ranging from a tiny to large. ***LIST SUBJECT TO CHANGE.
