Salary Range: $35,000 to $40,000 per annum, depending on qualifications.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Recreation Programmer will be responsible to research and assess the program needs of children to
youth to adults to seniors and minority groups to ensure that issues such as affordability, mobility, language
and culture do not inhibit access to community centre recreation, leisure and sport programs in their
neighbourhood. Community Centres are mandated to provide programming opportunities that encourage and
promote a healthy lifestyle for all community residents.
SCOPE
The Recreation Programmer will be required to complete community centre neighbourhood needs
assessments to determine what programs best fit the needs of all area residents; support the community
centres in the implementation of the most appropriate programs and prepare program evaluations. In
cooperation with the community centre, the Recreation Programmer will promote programs and volunteer and
leadership opportunities. The Recreation Programmer will report to the Executive Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Plan and develop sport and recreation programs in order to ensure that activities and events are made
available for all community area residents.
Main Activities


Research and identify the recreation requirements of the community
Assist community centres to develop a variety of sport, recreation and leisure programs

Network with community centres, community members and other service providers to develop
partnerships with existing programming

Assist the community centre to identify funding sources
2. Implement recreation programs to ensure that residents have access to sport, recreation and leisure
activities.
Main Activities

In cooperation with the community centre volunteers identify the most appropriate programs for
their neighbourhood

In cooperation with the community centre volunteers schedule activities, facilities and
staff/volunteers as required

In cooperation with the community centre volunteers evaluate existing and new programs
3. Administer recreation programs to ensure that programs are delivered within guidelines and budgets.
Main Activities

In cooperation with the community centre volunteers prepare a recreation plan

Prepare reports identifying community programs, numbers of participants and facility use
4. Promote recreation and sport programs in order to ensure that all area residents are aware of available
opportunities and activities.
Main Activities

Assist the community centre volunteers in the coordination of an active community relations
campaign to promote recreational and cultural programs

ontacts with the City of Winnipeg Community Services
Department, community recreation groups and other program service providers

Knowledge
The incumbent must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:

Techniques of planning, organizing and promoting program activities

Principles and methods used in program evaluation


WORKING CONDITIONS
Special Requirements
The incumbent must have

A valid drivers license

Own or have access to a vehicle

Be able to work flexible hours to include evenings and weekends

Work cooperatively with volunteers and the general public including groups of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds.
QUALIFICATIONS
A degree in recreation, leisure studies or related field with one year recreation experience would be an
asset. Other combinations of education and experience which meet the minimum requirements may be
substituted.
