RESOLUTION
COMMEMORATING
AND
HONORING
THE

LIFE AND OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS OF STEPHEN
9
MICHAEL DAVIS; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

WHEREAS, Stephen Michael Davis was a native of Jacksonville’s
12
Westside, graduated from Forrest High School in 1969, and attended
13
FCCJ; and
14
WHEREAS,
Mr.
Davis
was
a
long-time
employee
of
Scott
15
Paper/Kimberly Clark, and he and his wife Marilyn raised 5 children
16
on the Westside; and
17
WHEREAS, Steve Davis is best known for his years of devotion
18
to the cause of youth athletics, having started his coaching career
19
as a young man assisting his uncle “Red” Pendarvis at the North
20
Jacksonville Sports Association, and then coaching his sons when
21
they began playing sports at the Wesconnett Athletic Association;
22
and
23
WHEREAS, Mr. Davis coached youth football and baseball teams
24
in 4 decades, from North Jax and Wesconnett to Murray Hill and the
25
Westside
26
Football League in 1985; and
27
Athletic
Association,
and
also
founded
the
Westside
WHEREAS, after two decades of coaching at the youth level,
28
Steve
Davis
shifted
his
activities
to
the
high
school
level,
29
coaching baseball at Forrest High School and then working with, and
30
occasionally leading, the booster clubs at Forrest and Lee High
31
Schools; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Davis returned to the sidelines in 2004, coaching
2
the Tiney Mite (age 5 and 6) football teams on which his grandsons
3
played
4
untimely death in 2006; and
and
for
which
his
granddaughters
cheered,
before
his
5
WHEREAS, in honor of Steve Davis’s many contributions to youth
6
athletics, the football complex at Wesconnett Elementary Park will
7
be named the Stephen M. Davis Football Complex in his memory; and
8
WHEREAS, Steve Davis devoted most of his life to organizing,
9
leading and promoting youth athletics in Jacksonville; taught the
10
positive
lessons
of
discipline,
teamwork,
and
fair
play
11
thousands of young people; and throughout his life presented an
12
outstanding example of enthusiasm and civic involvement and pride
13
to everyone with whom he came in contact; now therefore
14
BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Jacksonville:
15
Section 1.
to
That the City hereby honors and commemorates
16
the life and many contributions of Stephen Michael Davis to the
17
City of Jacksonville, and particularly to his Westside home.
18
Davis’s life of unselfish service to the youth of the city will
19
stand as a shining example and a fond memory to all who knew,
20
respected and loved him.
21
Section 2.
Effective Date.
Mr.
This Resolution shall become

effective upon signature by the Mayor or upon becoming effective
23
without the Mayor's signature.
