Academic Notes
Coming to school, paying close attention, completing all
assignments both during class and homework are important
parts of the learning cycle. To this point, please make sure
that your child studies something every afternoon as part of
their home studies program. My student-scholars have been
asked to read and study their Social Studies text each day.
Using this strategy should enable them to be prepared for any
upcoming evaluation, be it a daily activity, quiz, test, district
assessment or the SC PASS test. Thank you, in advance, for
helping to make sure that your child is “responsible, respectful,
and ready to learn” each day.
Our current Social Studies unit for the second nine weeks is
about The American Revolution. Use the textbook, notes, and
research as study materials. Prepare to end this unit on
January 8th and get set for the district’s cumulative assessment
(Date TBA), covering units from August 2013 through January
2014 [Native Americans, Explorers of the New World, Cultural
Contributions, and the American Revolution].
Our Writing unit is about personal and persuasive essays.
We follow Lucy Caukins’s writing book requiring use of a
thesis-evidence-reason format which is the same as “boxes
and bullets.” Boxes and bullets are actually the same as using
the main idea and supporting details. Our primary goal is for
our writing to be easily understood by anyone who reads it.

Have your student-scholar to share about and show you our
new implementation of their Google account.

a safe, nurturing, and diverse environment where students are
challenged and empowered to use communications and
technology to reach their greatest potential.
Schoolwide Pledge
I pledge to be respectful, responsible, and be ready to learn
today. I will make VACT a great place to be.
Giving to Help Others
Congratulations to Mrs. D. Hanks’s student-scholars for
coming in first place to win a dance party for having
contributed the most cans for the Carolina-Clemson Food
Drive, headed by Ms. Mitchell, our school counselor.
Reading Is Power
Please keep checking with your student-scholar to
determine their appropriate completion of at least one
book for reading enrichment per week.
 Student-scholars should include information about
the book on their Reading log. The Reading log is due
by the first Friday of each month, unless told
otherwise.
 For Pizza Hut’s Book-It Reading Incentive Program,
parents/caregivers should sign the log and verify the
number of minutes the student-scholar has read.
[Minimum: 30 hours per month]
 Books read may also be used to complete a “Power
Reading” activity per a reading incentive guided by
Ms. Malmquist, our school’s media specialist.
