KEITH Email sent to Nancy on12 Feb 2003: Some comments I wanted to make on this family to hopefully be of some help: PLEASE READ AND STUDY carefully as there is A LOT OF INFO. Taking notes and charts will help.. 'mulatto' in the 1800's may not necessarily indicate 'black' or black 'Related' as it more likely indicated 'NON-WHITE'. I had thought Indians frequently were enslaved. The mixed racial inclination is likely a more recent interpretation of the 1900's. According to 'encarta' MSN dictionary the words, Mulatto (ethnic group) hispanic american, Latin America, mexico and west indies come up signifying more North, south and central american descent. You know us European folk, we twist definitions to suit us. I was unable to locate JPT Burley anywhere in the census and looking under various other names and spellings. However there is a 'TILMAN BURLEY' (age 36-55) in the 1830 census of King William Co. p. 89 with 5 Total people in his house, a presumed wife of age 36-55 and No young males yet but 1 female age <5 and 2 females age 10-20. Ten years later in 1840, he (TILMAN) is listed in the EASTERN DISTRICT of HENRICO Co. (abt Marshall) p. 224. He is again age 35-55 (probably closer to 55) with NOW 7 Total people to include 2 young MALES age <10, 2 young FEMALES age <10, 1 FEMALE age 24-35 and 1 FEMALE age 55-100 (could be mother). If this TILMAN (appears uncommon name) is your JPT than it appears he DID NOT originate in western VA but moved west from abt King William Co. Thus the indian connection is likely somewhere on the MATERNAL side (his wife or son's wife???). His wife, Sarah listed as being born abt 1821 is likely not his FIRST wife as she could not have bore the 2 females (<10 in 1830). Did JPT move west to Amherst early before 1830 than moved back east or was it his son or son's?? If it was JPT that went west early and met up with the Indians, than you may wish to check out the books on the 'MONACAN Indians' of Amherst referred to under 'INDIAN ISLAND' or the 'LOST ORDER' of Amherst. Don't forget to look at the INDEX to WILLS for JPT or ANY BURLEYS from AMHERST/ Henrico for 1850-1875?. We have found the reference by ELIZABETH WINGO who compiled many EARLY MARRIAGES of Tidewater to be of use. I don't know whether she did any for Richmond or other counties further west. Anyway check out ANY EARLY MARRIAGE COMPILATIONS 1800-1830. There were ONLY 2 sons of JPT by 1840. Were there more later?? We suspect Arthur (abt 1875) & William (abt 1840). There is also a James Burley (1844-1860) may be s/o James BELOW in 1860 census of Amherst. [perhaps his death record and/or Arthur's may supply clues]. Interestingly, there is a JAMESP (no spaces) BURLEY listed in the INDEX for Eastern Dist of Amherst Co. (1850). The census record, however, refers to simply JAMES BURLEY (b. abt 1821) p. 82. He has a family ADJACENT to another WILLIAM Burley (b. abt 1823) apparently SINGLE with ELIZABETH (age 62) p. 82. These are likely brothers and may be descendants of perhaps a brother of JPT. I don't know WHY The JAMESP in the Index but not in the actual record but certainly is suggestive and something to be concerned of. Their wills and/or death records may also yield useful info leading to JPT. ALSO in 1850 in SAME EASTERN DIST of Amherst yet 5 pages later (p. 87) is a George Burley (b. abt 1810) with wife Rachael (b. abt 1811) and children, Mary J., Charles T. Sarah Ann (all born 1842-1848) The James (age 35) above is in AMHERST C.H. (Court house??) P.O. in 1860 (p. 418) and his likely brother, William T. (age 35) (p. 263). Note the same ages similar to in 1850. William T is now married to an ANN L. (age 26) with children Sarah E. (age 6) and Wm A (age 4) and his presumed mother, ELIZABETH (now age 76) is still with him. James' wife is MJ (age 40) with 6 children to include Bettie (age 9) and a James (age 14). Note this James (according to ages), son of James may be the James (1844-1860) I originally thought may be a third son of YOUR William T. DON'T RULE OUT obtaining other records (Wills, death, etc) for any of these people as clues can be had. Put the info together in a safe place until we better tie them together. The George Burley referred to ABove and 5 pages (p. 87) later from William & James (p. 82) in 1850 of Amherst, is in Amherst C.H. P.O. in 1860 listed as GEORGE W. (age 47) and wife RACHAEL again and MANY Children to name a few Elizabeth, Sallie, James (age 8), Lucy (age 6) and a J.H.P (age 5). George W. was listed in 1840 as well. He apparently died by 1870 as his wife Rachael (age 55) and daughter Lucy (age 17) are living at an 'ALMO (Sp??) House??' in Temperance TWP Amherst in 1870 with Zacchariah Jennings as head (p. 551). George's net worth was 125 in 1860, not a lot but may be enough that he left a will?? I now suspect many or all of these Amherst Burleys are NOT in your direct ancestral line but MAY be descendants of a brother or BROTHERS of JPT. George W. may also be a brother as he is old enough. Have we ever obtained ANY DIRECT evidence to link them to AMHERST? with the possible existence of cousins or other relatives that may lead them to visit and thus provide the indian connection?? Even JPT appears to be in Eastern Va unless he made an early jaunt (pre 1830) west to visit a brother where he could have connected with an indian spouse. 11th Annual Powwow: May 16, 17 and 18, 2003 The Monacan Indians of Virginia http://www.monacannation.com/bibliography.shtml Rountree, Helen. 1986. “Ethnicity Among the 'Citizen Indians' of Tidewater Virginia, 1800-1930. Her other child named is William T. Burley. Three persons, James and Uriah Burley and Lucinda Stinnet (wife of Cornelias ?) are given as heirs of George Burley who may have been Elizabeth's brother-in-law. Uriah's on Elliott H. is to get nothing (maybe because he inherited earlier). Will is dated April 20 1870 and Jan. 18, 1875 probated. Polly is deceased at this time. I would also like to know Elizabeth's husband's name. Fran
