Purpose
This unit standard is for people who work in the motor and related industries.
People credited with this unit standard are able to store hazardous
automotive waste materials ready for disposal, and arrange for the disposal
of hazardous automotive waste materials.

Definition
Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which
are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace.
These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and
procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality
specifications, and legislative requirements.

Range
Hazardous automotive waste materials may include but are not limited to – paint
materials, chemicals, solvents, refrigerants, petrol and/or oil, adhesives, cleaning
materials, lead dust, masking materials, plastic materials, batteries (including hybrid
type), body and chassis components, mechanical components.

For this unit standard, it is essential that the practical assessment evidence is
obtained in the workplace under normal workplace conditions.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Store hazardous automotive waste materials ready for disposal.
Performance criteria
1.1
Safe working practices are carried out throughout the task in accordance with
legislative requirements.
Range
1.2
personal safety, safety of others, vehicle safety, workshop safety,
environmental safety, tools and equipment safety.
Storage areas and facilities are identified in accordance with legislative
requirements.
Range
may include but is not limited to – sealed fireproof drums and
suitable containers, dangerous goods store, recovery equipment.
1.3
Hazardous automotive waste materials are identified in a way that will enable
them to be stored in accordance with company requirements.
1.4
Hazards are identified prior to the hazardous automotive waste materials being
stored to enable compliance with company requirements.

may include but is not limited to – fire, fumes, toxic dust,
spontaneous combustion, contamination.
Hazardous automotive waste materials are stored in accordance with legislative
requirements.

Element 2
Arrange for the disposal of hazardous automotive waste materials.
Performance criteria
2.1
Hazardous automotive waste materials that can be recycled are identified, and
arrangements are made for these materials to be recycled, in accordance with
company requirements.
Range
may include but is not limited to – thinners/solvents, plastic, lead,
metal, oils, refrigerants, batteries.
2.2
Disposal company is selected to enable the non-recyclable hazardous
automotive waste materials to be removed safely from the workplace in
accordance with company requirements.
2.3
Arrangements for non-recyclable hazardous automotive waste materials to be
collected by the disposal company are carried out in accordance with company
requirements.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
Accreditation requirements and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this
standard are outlined in the Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP). The
AMAP also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations
wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for
tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
