Help students to work out unknown words from meaning: “What would make sense there? What would look right and sound right?” Get students to check any errors: “Did that make sense?” “You said _________ . Does that look right?” “Can we say it that way?” Get students to reread parts for fluency and phrasing. Orientation: The title of this book is Forests. When we think about the title and look at the picture of the front cover what predictions do we have about what this book might be about? What type of text is it likely to be? What do you expect to see in one of these texts? What is the name of the author? What connections can you make between all the photos and what might be in the text? Title Page: read the title again. What animals are these? Contents Page: Why has the author chosen to have a contents page? How can this help a reader? What page would you find information about forest fires? P4/5: This page has a heading “Introduction”. What does this mean? What would you expect to find in an introduction about forests? The photos relate to forests because… P6/7: The information in the photographs tell us …about forests? P8/9: What are the two types of photo on page 8 showing us? On page there is an unusual shot – how has it been taken and why? P10/11: Why do you think these trees could be important? P12/13: In a book on forests, explain why the author has chosen to include information on birds and animals. P14/15: The heading here is tree farms. What do you know about tree farms from looking at the photographs? P16/17: What do these photos tell us about logging and how the trees are used? P18/19: Describe what is happening in the photos and what effects this might have. P20/21: How might bushfires change forests? P22/23: This section on Walking in the Forests would be interesting because.? What is the purpose of the glossary and the index? Introduce new words and concepts: high frequency words; pack & communicate Prompt children to practise strategies. Each child reads the text independently.
