With almost 16 million article and conference records, the database covers every imaginable subject in science, technology, medicine, engineering, business, law, finance and the humanities. Coverage is from 1993 to date and is updated daily. All items are guaranteed to be available from the British Library. The following enhancements to the service are on schedule to be implemented by the start of the 2001/2002 academic year: 1) Direct linking from ZETOC Alert to records within the ZETOC Service offering access to the full record from a reference in your email Alert message. 2) A subject/author search facility within ZETOC Alert receive any new hits from the daily update by email. - allowing you to 3) Document Ordering direct from the British Library - initially supporting Copyright Fee Paid orders, but support for Inter-Library Loan is in development [but it is cheaper for members of Cambridge University to request Inter-Library Loans via the UL, SPL, Departmental or College Libraries at a subsidised cost of £3 each – would be almost £7 otherwise]. The first of these, the direct linking, will be implemented on the night of Friday 13th July. Please note that the renewal period for Alerts has been increased to 12 months.” *Current Foreign Newspapers in The British Library Newspaper Library* http://www.bl.uk/collections/newspaper/latest.html Information received via lis-link: “A new guide listing the foreign newspapers, news weeklies, and magazines currently received at the Newspaper Library from around the world, and added to the Library's major, historic collections, has been made available via The British Library Newspaper Library Website. The guide provides details of the latest issue available of each of the Library's currently received, non-British Isles publications (other than online or reference publications), and will be updated on a regular basis. It also provides the shelf marks of the titles received, to enable users to reserve up to four items for use in the Reading Rooms in Colindale, north west London, by phoning [+44 (0)20 7412 7353] or emailing the Library [mailto:newspaper@bl.uk ] 48 hours in advance of a visit. Publications currently added to the Library's collections include 9 titles from France, 8 from Germany, 10 from Russia, and 24 from the USA. Courses on offer include Library induction, Library catalogues, Subject resources, Introduction to electronic sources, Web of Science, ZETOC & ZETOC Alert. Course descriptions and a course timetable are provided. The UL is making a real effort to be more user friendly through developing these courses (especially the ones on how to actually use the UL), so please try to attend if there is something you would like to learn more about – details of how to do this, and how to book courses if necessary, are given on the site. ---------------------------------------------------------------------WEB SITE REVIEW *Edina Biosis* http://edina.ac.uk/biosis/ or access it via the UL’s A-Z list of databases at http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/InformationServices/datasets.html This is a reminder of availability of the comprehensive BIOSIS Previews database; the information is taken from the UL’s Electronic Services and Edina’s own web pages. BIOSIS is the electronic version of Biological Abstracts and Biological Abstracts/RRM (Reports, Reviews, Meetings). Thousands of life science journals, plus international meetings and books from more than 90 countries, are monitored for inclusion in BIOSIS Previews. The database contains bibliographic information from 1985 onwards for subjects ranging from traditional areas of biology such as botany, zoology and microbiology to related fields such as agriculture, pharmacology, biophysics, ecology, bioengineering, and experimental clinical medicine. Access is via Athens access accounts or personal accounts (the same passwords you use to access Web of Science, please ask the Librarian for more details). BIOSIS Previews is updated 52 times a year, and over 500,000 new records are added annually. The database now contains over 6.5 million records. Journals comprise 60% of the contents of the database, with references to meetings representing 33%, and reviews and reports 7%. Geographically, 51% of the records are European, 31% North American and the remaining 18% for the rest of the world, mostly Asia. To find records, you can perform Standard and Advanced searches, browse Indexes and search Authority Files. You can view your Marked Lists and your Search History. There is also a Help function. For a typical record of a journal article retrieved, you will given the (article) Title, Author, Author Address, Source, Document Type, Abstract, Major Concepts, Super Taxa, Organisms, Taxa Notes (most of the latter four fields are in the form of links that you can click on to see other related articles in that area). *World Resources Institute: EarthTrends* http://earthtrends.wri.org/ EarthTrends is an environmental information portal, and is accessible as part of the World Resources Institute’s web page. Themes you can find environmental information on include: Coastal and Marine Ecosystems; Water Resources and Freshwater Ecosystems; Climate and Atmosphere; Energy and Resources; Biodiversity and Protected Areas; Forests and Grasslands, for example. Each theme is divided into sections: There is a Searchable Database section that you can use to search for and retrieve information from over half a century’s worth of environmental data. You can search by country, region, variable and year, and view your results online or download them for use later; You can use the Data Tables section (based on the WRI’s World Resources Report series) for each theme to search for tables, notes and sources to compare data between countries and regions; The Country Profiles section for each theme presents environmental information for almost every country in the world, including notes and sources, about the key variables for each topic area. Charts and graphs are displayed which allow you to find vital statistics for a country, region or research topic; The Maps section for each theme provides relevant spatial data. The maps illustrate a variety of environmental topics – from wetlands to human development to ecosystems- including descriptive text and analysis, as well as information on how each map was developed; The Features section for each theme comprises articles about the latest and longest lasting conditions and trends in environmental and sustainable development. These articles highlight the WRI’s analytical strength and policy research, and makes vital information on the most recent environmental trends easily accessible. The EarthTrends appears to be under development in some areas, but it is easy to use and provides comprehensive and authoritative environmental data It is illustrated by clear and colourful diagrams and charts, and useful links to related organisations’ web sites are also given. *New Zealand Birds* http://www.nzbirds.com/ This site is dedicated to the birds of New Zealand and features beautiful prints from J.G. Keulemans 1967 edition of Buller's Birds of New Zealand. The Birdwatching page details bird watching locations on the North and South Islands of New Zealand, Trip Reports and Where to Find Endemic Birds. There is a Checklist of (Aves Taxonomy) of New Zealand birds, some with further links to information and illustrations. The Journal of NZ Birds is published online on this site and there is a comprehensive New Zealand Birds Gallery, providing links to detailed information on and illustrations of Endemic Birds, Native Birds, Introduced Birds and Extinct Birds, with an English Index. The Gallery is searchable by keyword. There is a link to the web page of Wingspan Birds of Prey Trust, “a voluntary and charitable trust which has the approval of the Department of Conservation of the New Zealand government to care for sick, injured and orphaned raptors. This includes research into their habits and habitat, captive breeding, public awareness and rehabilitation of raptors back into the wild.” Further links include: the NZ Birds Store; Godwits the Guest House; Collective Nouns; Links to further related ornithological web pages; Maori Myth, Legend & Lore; and lists of National Birds. The New Zealand Birds site is a source full of interesting and valuable information, which is well organised and easy to use. ---------------------------------------------------------------------FEEDBACK Comments and suggestions are always very welcome regarding the Balfour Bulletin.
