Issue Date: June 16, 1973 Spain: Morocco Fishing Talks Held Spain and Morocco issued a joint communique April 26 in Madrid after two days of talks between Foreign Minister Gregorio Lopez Bravo and his Moroccan counterpart, Ahmed Taibi Benhima, on the two countries' fishing and territorial waters dispute. [See 1973 Spain: Morocco Waters Dispute] Morocco had officially extended its claims to exclusive fishing rights from 12 to 70 miles off the coast in early March. Fishing vessels had been seized by both sides during March and April, and a Spanish seaplane exchanged gunfire with a Moroccan navy launch April 2.
